Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adaptive incremental redundancy (hybrid ARQ) method for retransmitting information through a communication channel of a wireless communication system. SOLUTION: Code multiplexing is used within fixed length frames in order to change the number of codes, modulation, and coding on retransmissions to provide the desired redundancy for successful decoding. The operation of adaptive hybrid ARQ in the code domain also provided finer granularity in which to efficiently transmitting redundancy. A method for retransmitting information in a communication channel having a plurality of fixed length frames each divided into a plurality of time slots of equal duration includes the step of code multiplexing a retransmission of a previous transmission within one of the fixed length frames using one or more of a plurality of codes. The number of codes used for the retransmission is variable based on the condition of the communication channel.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of data rate adaptation based on channel conditions. SOLUTION: Data is transmitted at a first data rate based on a measured first channel condition. If a NACK is received, the data is retransmitted. The data is retransmitted at a rate which is based on the condition of the channel during or before the transmission of the NACK. The data retransmission rate can be based on the actual channel condition at the time of the first transmission plus the condition of the channel before or during the transmission of the NACK.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ARQ(automatic repeat request) technique which uses channel resources effectively while allowing flexibility of scheduling. SOLUTION: The ARQ technique which uses channel resources effectively while allowing flexibility of scheduling is disclosed. This ARQ technique is asynchronous parallel packet transmitting technique which uses a packet identifier, a sequence identifier and a user identifier. The ARQ technique does not require that a strict timing relation exists between a parallel channel and a physical layer frame, because the identifiers show identity of the user to which a sub-packet is applied, identity of the sub-packet and sequence of the sub-packet to the user.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ARQ technology to help a transmitter send information in an appropriate channel status so that not only the throughput of a channel but that of entire communication system may be improved. SOLUTION: Packet information is decoded and it is classified to a plurality of sub-packets. Each of the sub-packets is provided with an identification information and an information status flag of one bit, and the information status flag indicates that the information is a NEW one or a CONTINUE one. The information to be sent is subjected to a scheduling algorism to determine when the information is sent, what amount of information is sent, or how many times the information is sent repeatedly until the transmission is completed. Thus, the information is sent asynchrously.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hybrid transmission method for wireless communications. SOLUTION: A communication channel is divided into a plurality of time slots of equal duration and each of the time slots is further sub-divided into multiple sub-slots. In one embodiment, the communication channel is divided into time slots according to a TDMA (time division multiple access) scheme. Each time slot is then further code-multiplexed into a plurality of sub-slots according to a CDMA (code division multiple access) scheme. Each of the sub- slots is therefore capable of carrying a separately coded transmission within the communication channel, so that multiple simultaneous transmissions can occur in any given time slot. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for transmitting signaling information with high reliability. SOLUTION: First signaling information is transmitted via a main control channel. This first signaling information is defined as a pair of particular information; second signaling information is transmitted via, a second control channel; before transmission, the second signaling information is scrambled according to a scrambling procedure expressing the first signaling information; and the contents of the first signaling information are integrated in the second signaling information and encoded by this scrambling procedure to protect the integrity of the first and second signaling information.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform an automatic repetition request by making an identification number correspond to at least one unit of data to be transmitted. SOLUTION: On a receiver side, variables V(N) and V(R) are monitored. The variable V(N) shows a maximum sequence number, by which all the bytes of previous data are received without errors. V(R) shows the sequence number of subsequently new data byte, which is expected to be received from a transmitter. A variable VT(N) is a value of V(N), which is received the latest from the receiver in a control message sent from the receiver to the transmitter. A variable VT(R) is the latest value of the variable V(R) transmitted to the transmitter from the receiver in the control message. The variable V(S) is the sequence number allocated to the byte of next data, which is to be transmitted to the receiver from the transmitter.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for processing control information in a wireless communication system. SOLUTION: In this method, portions of the control information are separately encoded and decoded, so that transmission format information for a corresponding data transmission can be determined with a reduced set of decoded control information. The control information is convolutionally coded using either a single set of tail bits or by judiciously dispersing the tail bits among different portions of the encoded signaling information. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for switching base stations in wireless communication. SOLUTION: An access terminal 42 continues to receive data from a previous base station 46, and the data forwarded to the previous base station 46 will not be lost. Whenever the access terminal 42 decides to switch to a new base station 50, the access terminal 42 sends an indication to the wireless communications system 40 of the identity of the selected base station 50. The access terminal 42 continues to receive data from the previous base station 46. The previous data sent to the previous base station 46 are forwarded to the access terminal 42. When new data are sent to the new base station 50, the wireless communications system 40 can transmit the data to the access terminal 42 and the access terminal 42 can start reception of the data from the new base station 50.
