    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adaptive incremental redundancy (hybrid ARQ) method for retransmitting information through a communication channel of a wireless communication system. SOLUTION: Code multiplexing is used within fixed length frames in order to change the number of codes, modulation, and coding on retransmissions to provide the desired redundancy for successful decoding. The operation of adaptive hybrid ARQ in the code domain also provided finer granularity in which to efficiently transmitting redundancy. A method for retransmitting information in a communication channel having a plurality of fixed length frames each divided into a plurality of time slots of equal duration includes the step of code multiplexing a retransmission of a previous transmission within one of the fixed length frames using one or more of a plurality of codes. The number of codes used for the retransmission is variable based on the condition of the communication channel.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a reverse-link outer loop power control(ROLPC) based on a bit error rate BER that has adaptive compensation with respect to a BER target and takes the difference between the mean value and the median of the BER into account in a wireless communication system. SOLUTION: In the case of carrying out the ROLPC based on a BER after decoding, a user metric target is changed as a function of the 'signature' of a communication channel. The base station utilizes the ROLPC system using the BER after decoding for the user metric target. The ROLPC system uses either of an instantaneous value of the BER and a value weakly filtered to compare the target SNR with the target BER for the adjustment. The target BER value is changed as a function of a secondary statistic of the received SNR (e.g. variance, standard deviation). The secondary statistic of the received SNR represents the signature of a communication channel.

For example, the transport channel system reduces the amount of transport format information required for using a shared data channel, such as the actual number of packet data units in a transport channel of the shared data channel.     Abstract: In a wireless communications system, a base station employs a bit error rate (BER) based Reverse Outer Loop Power Control (ROLPC) technique. The ROLPC techniqu e uses either instantaneous or weakly filtered values of the BER for compariso n with a BER target value for adjusting a target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The BER target value is varied as a function of a second order statistic (e.g. variance, standard deviation) of the received SNR. In another embodiment, a symbol error count based ROLPC technique uses adaptive SER targets. In particular, a base station uses a 2nd order statistic, e.g., standard deviation (variance), to identify, or act as a signature of, a particular cellular (wireless) communications environment. The base station monitors the standar d deviation of the symbol error count of a received signal (transmitted from a mobile station). The target signal-to-noise ratio ((E b/N0)T) of this received signal is adjusted as a function of the value of the standard deviation and the adjusted (E b/N0)T target is used to provide power control.
