Abstract: A data recorder having a self-diagnostic function using a magnetic tape accommodated in a case (or cassette). The case is provided with holes indicating a grade of the magnetic tape. When the magnetic tape unit is loaded (mounted) in the data recorder, the holes are detected and identified. When the identified grade is that for the self-diagnosis, the self-diagnosis is executed using that magnetic tape. Cleaning of a head is also carried out using the identified cleaning magnetic tape.

Abstract: In a self diagnosis method and control apparatus for positive self diagnosis of equipment having complicatedly interlaced mechanical portions, equipment under diagnosis is divided into a plurality of areas under diagnosis, each of which is assigned an evaluation variable. Diagnosis is executed in units of diagnostic steps classified for each area under diagnosis. Based on an execution result, points are allotted to the evaluation variable. Based on the evaluation variable, or a sum of allotted points, each area under diagnosis is diagnosed and a diagnostic result is displayed for self diagnosis. Meanwhile, those diagnostic steps which are determined invalid by an execution result of another diagnostic step will not be executed. The equipment under diagnosis includes those which contain mechanical portions.

User key information is then read out of the magnetic tape 107 of the cartridge 130. The user information is defined as the discharge region of the magnetic tape 107. The reading out of the user key information is made possible in the state that the magnetic tape 107 is taken up on a rotary head 106. The collation of the user key information is executed and when all of the information coincides, a load command is sent from a host computer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape streamer which can process data recorded by a data recorder without burdening a host computer with load, and can also be used as a generally usable device. SOLUTION: The tape streamer A reproduces the data in a magnetic tape 210 recorded by a data recorder from the head, and when the tape streamer A detects a data (area 210A) recorded on this magnetic tape 210, it outputs this data to the other tape streamer B, and copies it onto a new (unrecorded) magnetic tape 220. Next, when an unrecorded area 210B is detected in the tape streamer A, this part is judged as a gap, and a FM(film mark) is inserted therein, and it is outputted to the tape streamer B. Moreover, when the tape is reproduced up to the end, EOD(end of data) is added to the data, and the data are outputted to the tape streamer B.

By employing such constitution, it is possible to easily correct the reproducing position information IDR based on the count information IDC2 even when no reproducing position information IDR is obtained from the position information track CTL.
