Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the fusion of polyester pellets at the time of the supply to a drying process or a molding machine by forming at least one dent to the surface which is formed to each of the polyester pellets when the pellets are solidified from a molten state and roughening the surface of each of the pellets after solidification. CONSTITUTION:A surface 1 is formed when a strand of molten polyester is solidified and does not contain the cut surface 2 made by a cutter. A dent 3 is pref. a recessed part relatively shallow with respect to the area thereof like the crater on the surface of the moon and can be formed by cutting the strand of molten polyester extruded from die by a cutter in such a state that the surface of the strand is solidified but the interior thereof is in a molten state. The area of one dent is pref. about 1/30-1/5 the surface area of each of pellets. After the pellets are solidified, the surface of each of the pellets is roughened by stirring the pellets using a granule stirring device to apply shearing treatment to the surfaces thereof and the difference between the surface roughness Ra after surface roughening treatment and that before surface roughening treatment is pref. set to 0.4mum or more.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a high-quality, foreign matter-free polyester in good efficiency, by using a stable additive solution prepared by dissolving additives used in the polycondensation step in an ethylene glcyol/water mixture. CONSTITUTION:An additive solution is prepared by dissolving about 5-60wt% water-soluble compound (preferably, acetate) of a metal selected from the group consisting of Li, Ca, Mn, Co, and Zn in a mixture of 10-95wt% ethylene glycol and 90-5wt% water. The resulting solution has a long-term stability and does not form any precipitate or deposit for a long period of time, so that it is possible to produce a good-quality polyester economically over a plurality of batches by preparing the above solution in a large amount at once and using it in divided portions in the polycondensation step for producing a polyester from terephthalic acid (derivative) and ethylene glcyol.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester lowered in the amt. of the terminal carboxyl groups of the polymer chain and hence improved in hydrolytic resistance at a low cost by additionally adding a specific amt. of a dihydroxy component after completion of an esterification reaction and effecting a polymn. reaction after a specific period of time in a specific temp. range. CONSTITUTION: After completion of an esterification reaction (e.g. an esterification reaction of terephthalic acid with 1,4-butanediol), 0.1-0.5mol, based on the dicarboxylic acid component, dihydroxy component is additionally added to an esterification reaction vessel. The resulting mixture is stirred or allowed to stand in a temp. range of the b.p. of the dihydroxy component to the m.p. of the resulting prepolymer far 3 to 60min. Thereafter, the mixture is transferred to a polymerizer, wherein a polymn. reaction thereof is effected. According to the foregoing procedure, a polyester lowered in the amt. of the terminal carboxyl groups of the polymer chain can be prepd. at a low cost without needing large-scale remodeling of existent production facilities. This palyester is expected to be improved in salid phase polymerizability, lowered in water absorption, and improved in hydrolytic resistance under heat and moisture.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a particle-contg. polyester contg. no agglomerated coarse particle by continuously feeding a glycol slurry of fine inert inorg. particles to a high-shear dispersing machine of a specific structure, dispersing the particles homogeneously, and then feeding the slurry to a polyester producing step. CONSTITUTION:A glycol slurry of inert inorg. particles (e.g. silica) having a mean primary particle diameter of 3mum or lower is continuously fed to a high- shear dispersing machine which meets the following three requirements: the inside of the machine is a cylindrical space, which is filled with dispersion- promoting particles 4 (e.g. glass particles) having a mean diameter of 0.8-2mm and occupying 60-90vol.% of the space; when looked from above, the machine is equipped with a plurality of stirring blades 3 having pins radially extending form the center to at least four directions; and the distance between the inner wall of the machine and a point of the pin is at most three times the means diameter of the dispersion-promoting particles. The inert inorg. particles are homogeneously dispersed in the glycol, and then the slurry is fed to a polyester producing step wherein a dicarboxylic acid component and a glycol component are reacted, producing a particle-contg. polyester.

CONSTITUTION:The objective polyester can be produced e.g. by esterifying (A) a dicarboxylic acid composed mainly of terephthalic acid (derivative) with (B) ethylene glycol, adding (C) a glycol-soluble salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal (e.g. Li carbonate) to the reaction mixture when the conversion reaches >=94% and adding (D) preferably 0.1-10wt% granular polyester (based on the produced polymer) before the intrinsic viscosity of the intermediate product reaches 0.4.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for a liquid crystal resin pellet of which the discharge-stability is increased. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal resin under a molten state is discharged in a trough wherein cooling water is made to flow, by a discharging device as a strand group. Then, the strand group is solidified by cooling, and cut under the existence of the cooling water for this manufacturing method for pellets. In this manufacturing method, at least in the discharge initial stage from when the strand group is discharged from the discharging device to when the strand group reaches a cutter section, an amount of the cooling water, which is from 1.1 times to 10 times based on the amount of the cooling water at the normal pellet-forming time is made to flow into the trough.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a high-quality polyester in an industrially advantagenous manner by using the glycol distillates generated in each step as part or the whole of the starting material. SOLUTION: This production process comprises feeding terephthalic acid and/or its esterifiable derivative and a glycol and/or its esterifiable derivative as the starting material into esterification reactors 3 and 4 to effect esterification and feeding the obtained oligoester into polycondensation reactors 7, 8 and 9 to effect polycondensation. In this process, the distillates based on the glycol and/or its esterifiable derivative discharged from the esterification reactors 3 and 4 and/or the polycondensation reactors 7, 8 and 9 are separated from a solid or semi-solid high-melting polymer having a melting point equal to or higher than the esterification temperature or the polycondensation temperature by utilizing the difference in specific gravities.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To pelletize a plurality of types of thermoplastic resins having different characteristics by a single cooling and cutting unit. SOLUTION: The apparatus for manufacturing a thermoplastic resin pellet comprises a cooling unit for cooling to solidify a strand group 3 obtained by discharging a thermoplastic resin of a molten state from a discharging unit 2, and a cutter 12 for cutting the cooled and solidified group 3 in the presence of the cooling water. The cooling unit has a cooling tray 4 of the unit 2 side and a conveyor belt 7 of the cutter 12 side. The tray 4 is inclined horizontally at a down gradient directly under the unit 2, disposed to an inlet of the belt 7, and has a cooling water, supplying unit directly under the unit 2 so that the water can flow from its upstream to its downstream. The belt 7 mounts the group 3 and the cooling water on its upper surface to convey them toward the cutter 12.
