Abstract: PURPOSE:To distribute the discharge uniformly in the discharge space and unify the brightness distribution by exposing side edge sections (air-cooled sections) of electrodes on the opposite side to electrode sections at the outside of a bulb. CONSTITUTION:Both spacers 12, 12 and spacer sections 31, 31 of both electrode spacers 3, 3 are arranged in parallel crosses, both electrode sections 32, 32 are faced to each other, both glass substrates 11, 11 are clamped, and both air-cooled sections 33, 33 are located outside the glass substrates 11. Both glass substrates 11, 11 are welded to the spacers 12, 12 and the spacer sections 31, 31 of the electrode spacers 3, 3, and they are hermetically sealed to form a bulb 1. The interior of the bulb 1 is exhausted, the necessary discharge gas such as argon, mercury is sealed to form a discharge lamp. The air-cooled sections are cooled by the outside air while the lamp is lit, thereby the electrode sections are set to the uniform temperature, the discharge of the whole electrode sections is unified, and the whole bulb shows the uniform brightness.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent an irregular movement of the cathode spot and to eliminate an early burn-out or early blackening resulting form the irregular movement of the cathode spot by placing a bypass circuit including an impedance between lead wires or between the wires connected to the lead wires. CONSTITUTION:In a fluorescent lamp unit using a small size fluorescent lamp with a lamp current less than 100mA, a bypass circuit 6 including an impedance is inserted between a pair of lead wires 54 and 55 which are led from an electrode 56, or between wires connected to the lead wires 54 and 55. As a result, the heating at the electrode parts other than the cathode spot is suppressed, the spot position is stabilized, the cathode spot moves from one end to the other end of the filament electrode gradually in order with the passage of the lighting time, and consequently, the electrode never transfers to the unheating electron emission until the majority of the cathode substance is consumed, resulting in a long service life of the fluorescent lamp.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make it possible to gain stable discharge-characteristic not affected by the degree of a lamp current by forming a discharge electrode with a metal structure comprising plural holes opened in the direction of discharge and putting at least one of these plural holes in such a condition that an arc spot is generated easier than those for other holes. CONSTITUTION:A discharge electrode 13 in form of a metal structure 12 which is formed in such way that metal sleeves 7-11 made of nickel or the like are bundled, with their own outer walls stuck to each other, on lead wires 6 and 6 is attached to a stem 5. The metal sleeves 7-11 are arranged in parralel with the axis of a glass bulb 4 and at least one of the metal sleeves 7-11, such as, a metal sleeve 9 is formed in such a way that it is opened to the side of the discharge electrode facing the sleeve and arranged at the other end of glass bulb 4, that is, in the direction of discharge. Accordingly, when discharge is started, arc spots are easily generated in the metal sleeve 9, since the impedance of discharge thereof is small, even if a lamp current is small. Therefore, glow always enters the metal sleeve 9 when discharge is started and while the lamp is on, so that stable discharge is established.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To attain high efficiency in high-frequency lighting of a fluorescent lamp, by combination of special lamp design and special lighting conditions. CONSTITUTION:A fluorescent lamp of 18-30mm. in the internal diameter d of the bulb and 1,380mm. or less of the inter-electrode distance l is applied with a lighting voltage of 10-100kHz of the frequency providing the input power of 0.23- 0.31 Watt per unit length of the positive column. In the fluorescent lamp 1, rare gas such as argon, krypton, and the like is filled at the pressure ranging between 107-333 pascal. When the filled rare gas is of more than 90% argon by volume, such an additional effect is provided that the striped lighting disappears quickly.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To judge the quality of a lamp with high accuracy by synthesizing spectrums from impurities mixed inside a lamp and from a substance to be originally sealed therein for measuring its relaxation time. CONSTITUTION:Voltage is impressed on the electrode 2a and the coil 3a of a florescent lamp 1 by means of a neon transformer 3 so as to force the fluorescent lamp 1 to make intermittent discharging action. Light fluorescent lamp 1 is incident inside a detection box 4 from an incident window 4a to spectrally diffracted into the light A having wavelength 320nm or more and the light B having wavelength less than the above by means of a dichroic mirror(DM) 5. The light A passes through an interference filter 6 and the light AA (which is the light from the impurities N2 and has a longer relaxation time than the light from Hg) having wavelength 337nm is incident on the DM 12 through a reflection mirror 10. On the hand, the light B passes a neutral filter 7 and an interference filter 9, while the light BB (light from Hg) having wavelength 313nm is incident on the DM 12. The light AA and the light BB are synthesized in the DM 12 to be incident on a photoelectron amplifying tube 11 so as to display a relaxation characteristic of a synthetic spectrum.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate the localization of discharge arc so as to reduce the ununiformity of the brightness of a lamp by connecting shorter side walls of respective flat bulbs through a connecting tube to construct a continued discharge channel so as that the both apertures of the connecting tube are projected to the middle portion of the respective flat bulbs. CONSTITUTION:Shorter side walls of respective flat bulbs 1 are connected through a connecting tube 2 to construct a continued discharge channel, and the both apertures of the connecting tube 2 are projected to the middle portion of the respective flat bulbs. The discharge arc has characteristics to pass through the minimum part in the discharge channel and to be produced in the vicinity of the apertures of the connecting tube 2 in the flat bulbs 1, therefore by projecting the apertures of the connecting tube 2 to the middle portion of the respective bulbs 1 the discharge arc is produced in the central portion of respective flat bulbs, so that the whole bulbs can be brightened to eliminate the ununiformity of the brightness of the lamp.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make an accurate detection of a faulty exhaust by detecting it with the ratio between the ultraviolet light by an impurity gas and the light emitted by a sealed gas contained in the discharging spectra when a discharge lamp is discharged after exhausting of air and sealing of a desired gas. CONSTITUTION:An outer electrode 2 is provided on the outside tube wall near an inner electrode 1a on an exhaust side of a fluorescent lamp 1 and a neon transformer 3 is connected between the inner electrode 1a and the outer electrode 2 to generate an electric discharge between these electrode. A mercury spectrum light of 365 nm wave length and a nitrogen spectrum light of 337 nm wave length are taken out of the discharge light of a fluorescent lamp 1, and the exhausting quality is judged according to the ratio between these light levels. Thereby the exhausting quality can be correctly judged without being influenced by an outside light, the kind of phosphors or fluctuation of sealed gas quantity. Even when the mixed air quantity is small, the exhausting quality can be judged with good sensibility.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the overall length of a glass bulb to act as a discharge space to cause luminescence by closing end faces of the glass bulb with metal closures and sealing electric discharge gas therein so as to structure a low pressure electric discharge lamp and impressing high frequency voltage to metal parts of the closures. CONSTITUTION:A closure 3 is made up of an elliptical metal bonnet 31 bridging and closing end faces of both glass bulbs 1 and 1, and a cap shaped metal baseplate 32 surrounding the outer surface of the bonnet 31. And, the inner surface of the baseplate 32 is structured into an electrode surface 36 with metal surface exposed. A power supply B is composed of a high frequency transmitter 6 and a stabilizer 7 with their output terminals connected to facing baseplates 32 and 32. Since an electrode surface 36 here is cap-shaped and voltage impressed thereon is of high frequency, plasma with relatively high density can be generated easily in the closure 3, enabling easy lighting and continuation of constant electric discharge. Since the space between bonnets 31 and 31 at both ends of the bulb becomes luminous, almost the entire length of the bulb can be made luminous.
