    Abstract: Induction charging apparatus for HVLP spray guns and air-assisted airless spray guns includes an air cap having a central orifice for receiving a spray gun nozzle. The cap includes one or more charging electrodes adjacent the orifice and carrying a voltage sufficiently large to induce on the spray droplets charges of a polarity opposite to that on the electrodes. A rotatable electrical connector enables the cap to rotate 360.degree. while maintaining electrical connections between the electrodes and a power supply. The spray gun nozzle is an airless nozzle receiving liquid at a pressure of about 1,000 psi and having a spray tip from which liquid is sprayed along a flow path coaxial with the electrodes. Air at less than about 10 psi is directed along the flow path to assist in the atomization of the liquid from the airless nozzle.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method including a droplet coating generator for generating a stream of electrically charged coating droplets within an evacuable chamber towards a substrate positioned within the evacuable chamber. A piezoelectric vibrator and orifice plate coupled thereto generate the stream of coating droplets. The coating droplets are urged to move in a sweeping motion across the substrate by at least one pair of opposing spaced apart electrodes powered by an electrical power supply. A uniform coating is thus produced while the evacuable chamber is maintained at subatmospheric pressure as required during typical semiconductor processing. Multiple applications of a photoresist coating may be applied by the coating apparatus without requiring that the evacuable chamber be repeatedly vented and pumped down to subatmospheric pressure.

    Abstract: An electrostatic high voltage isolation system with internal charge generation in which conductive coating material to be sprayed is electrostatically charged by charging discrete droplets of coating material transferred from a coating material source to a supply of coating material for a spray gun. The source of coating material includes an electrically grounded reservoir of coating material having a nozzle aperture in a bottom portion thereof, and the coating material in the reservoir is mechanically vibrated to produce a pulsed jet droplet flow of coating material from the nozzle into a supply container for the spray gun. A high voltage electrode at the location of droplet formation induces an electrostatic charge on the droplets in order to electrostatically charge the coating material transferred to the gun supply container for use by the gun for electrostatic coating.

    Abstract: The electrostatic nozzle may be used to spray one or more charged clouds in different areas of an enclosed room to allow different materials to be deposited on different sections of the surfaces. The nozzle includes a conduit through which air passes over one or more airfoils to entrain a liquid across the surface. A charged electrode, facing the surface, inductively charges the liquid on the surface. The liquid is atomized at the trailing edge of the airfoil by a cross-current created by an air deflector near the trailing edge of the airfoil.

    Abstract: Electrostatic spraying of liquid compositions is carried out by supplying the liquid to a spray orifice, preferably of capillary dimensions, having a charged surface which is electrically conducting or semi-conducting and which is adjacent a field intensifying electrode, the arrangement being such that the liquid is drawn out primarily by electrostatic forces, atomized into electrically charged particles without substantial corona discharge and projected past the field intensifying electrode. The spraying process and apparatus has particular utility in the spraying of liquid pesticide compositions at ultra-low volume, in that the droplets are of uniform size and are electrostatically attracted to the plants so as to wrap around the leaves of the planets and coat both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves.

    Abstract: A method of applying a coating composition, which preferably has a high solids content, to a workpiece.     Abstract: Disclosed is a spray gun having a gas nozzle and a fluid nozzle, each of the nozzles being in cooperative spatial relationship with the other to cause a fluid stream issuing from the fluid nozzle to be atomized and sprayed as fluid particles by gas issuing from the gas nozzle.
