Abstract:
The invention relates to a computer readable medium comprising one or more programs for carrying out a method for determining a patient's tooth shade. The method generally includes the steps of generating an image of a patient's tooth wherein the image includes color information representative of the patient's tooth shade; storing color information representative of a plurality of tooth shades; and comparing the color information of the image with the stored tooth shade color information to identify one or more tooth shades having a combined color that corresponds to the patient's tooth shade, and the color information that is obtained may be displayed to identify one or more tooth shades having a combined color corresponding to the determined tooth color. Preferably, the displayed data includes RGB chromaticities of the color image, and the patient's tooth color is determined by averaging the color information at selected locations of the image which correspond to different spatial locations of the patient's tooth. If desired, the color information of the patient's tooth can be electronically stored for use at a later time.
Abstract:
A colorimeter capable of calibrating color monitors, whether having cathode ray tube or liquid crystal (LCD) displays, is provided by a photometric array of photodetector and optical filter pairs. The filters include long-pass, edge filters which cover overlapping regions at the upper end of the visible spectrum and a filter which covers the entire visible spectrum. The outputs of the photodetectors are digitally synthesized to provide a response which mimics the response established by the Commission Internationale de 1′Eclairage (CIE) xyz (bar) functions almost perfectly. The response which is mimicked may be represented by the CIE color matching functions. The pairs and the associated components are mounted on a printed circuit board captured in a clamshell housing and having an array of apertures which define angularly constrained fields of view of a surface from which the light, to be colormetrically analyzed, emanates. The printed circuit board includes a field programmable gate array programmed to read data from the plurality of filter/detector pairs in parallel. The colorimeter is capable generally of measuring the color characteristics, especially the color temperatures of radiation radiating and reflecting bodies (sources), including so-called black bodies.

An improved and lower cost color spectrophotometer, especially suitable for an on-line color printer color control system, in which plural different spectra LEDs sequentially perpendicularly illuminate a common and substantially circularly illuminated color test area, which may be variably spaced and variably oriented relative to the spectrophotometer, through a common central lens system, and also the reflected illumination therefrom may be measured at 45 degrees thereto by averaging the outputs of photodetectors spaced around that circularly illuminated color test area, to provide reduced sensitivity to the variable angular or azimuthal orientation of the color test area relative to the spectrophotometer, and which photodetectors may be so illuminated by 1:1 optics for spatial insensitivity.
Abstract:
The present invention is an apparatus for measuring the color of a light signal. The apparatus includes a plurality of color sensing elements, an optical system for illuminating each of the color sensing elements with light from the light source, and a controller for determining the intensity and wavelength of the light signal from the signals generated by said color sensing elements. Each color sensing element generates an electrical signal that depends on the wavelength and intensity of light incident on the color sensing element. Each of the color sensing elements is characterized by a gain function that relates the electrical signal generated thereby to the wavelength and intensity of light incident thereon. Each of the gain functions is different from the others of the gain functions.

Abstract:
An improved and lower cost color spectrophotometer, especially suitable for on-line color printer color control systems, incorporating a low cost commercial imaging chip, which normally only forms part of a three row, three color, document imaging bar used for imaging documents in scanners, digital copiers, or multifunction products, having multiple photo-sites with at least three different color filters in three rows. This multiple photo-sites chip may be modified to also provide unfiltered photo-sites. This spectrophotometer may have a substantially reduced number of different LED or other spectral illumination sources, one of which may be for white light, yet provide multiple spectral data outputs from the differently filtered photo-sites being simultaneous illuminated by the light reflected from a color test target area which is being sequentially illuminated by the respective limited number of LEDs, enabling broad spectrum information and color control.

Abstract:
A method is provided for measuring the color of irregular surface materials, including textiles which may provide dissimilar color measurements from different viewing angles, by illuminating a sampling area of the irregular surface material approximately perpendicularly thereto and measuring the color reflected from that area at a substantial angle, preferably about 45 degrees, with a plurality of separate photodetectors arrayed circularly around the illuminated sampling area of irregular surface material to receive the reflected illumination from substantially opposing directions and at a substantial angle to the illuminated area, for providing a more accurate yet lower cost color measurement system for textiles that can be used easily, quickly, and uncritically in terms of the handling, positioning and orientation of the textile material being tested.
Abstract:
Color/optical characteristics measuring systems and methods are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics/elements are spaced apart from a central source fiber optic/element and received light reflected from the surface of the object is measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object being measured. Under processor control, the color measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention.

The optical axis of the imaging lens system is oriented at 45null to the illuminated color test patches, and the photodetector chip is physically mounted perpendicular to the plane of the illuminated color test patches. Respective photo-sensor chips and associated 1:1 optics may be mounted on opposing sides of the spectrophotometer physically oriented at 90null to the test target area plane receiving the reflected light from the test target optically oriented at 45null to the illuminated test target.
