Abstract:
A multi-valve engine of the type having a line of cylinders, intake and exhaust camshafts, and rocker arms for operatively connecting valves to the camshafts includes a first valve group of three valves consisting of either intake valves or exhaust valves and a second valve group consisting of the other of either intake valves or exhaust valves. Each of the valves of the first valve group is oriented such that a valve stem thereof is inclined outwardly to one side of the line of cylinders, while each of the valve of the second valve group is oriented such that a valve stem thereof inclines outwardly to an opposite side of the line of cylinders. First hydraulic lash adjuster means for a centrally-located valve out of three valves of the first valve group is positioned closer to a bore center of the cylinder than the centrally-located valve, or on a delay side in the rotational direction of the camshaft. Second and third hydraulic lash adjuster means for side-located valves of the three valves of the first valve group are positioned farther from the bore center than the side-located valves, or on a leading side in the rotational direction of the camshaft.

An internal combustion reciprocating piston engine is provided with a single overhead camshaft which operates six valves associated with a single combustion chamber by desmodromic valve gear. As viewed in a direction along the camshaft, the valves are mutually divergent in the direction from the camshaft towards the combustion chamber and some valve pairs are more divergent than the other valve pairs.
Abstract:
An induction system for an internal combustion engine for improving running throughout the entire engine speed and load ranges. The induction system comprises a first intake passage that serves the chamber through a first intake port and a second intake passage that serves the chamber through second and third intake ports. The effective cross-sectional area of the first intake passage is substantially smaller than that of the second intake passage and staged throttle valves are incorporated so that the charge requirements at low speed are supplied primarily through the first intake passage.
Abstract:
An induction system for an internal combustion engine wherein each chamber of the engine is provided with three intake ports and one charge former serves two of those intake ports while another charge former serves the other intake port. The charge formers employ a staged throttle valve arrangement so that the other charge former supplies the idle and low speed requirements and the first mentioned charge former comes into operation only at high speeds and loads. In accordance with another feature, the arrangement is provided for pairs of chambers and the single charge former serves two chambers.

Several embodiments of induction systems for internal combustion engines embodying three intake valves per cylinder. Each system divides the induction passage for each cylinder into at least two parts and a flow controlling throttle valve is positioned in one of the parts. In some embodiments, the parts have equal effective flow areas and in others they have unequal flow areas. In further embodiments, there are three intake passages serving the same chamber and throttle valves are positioned in two if them. In some of these embodiments, the throttle valves are operated simultaneously while in others they are operated in staged sequence.

Two embodiments of valve arrangements for internal combustion engines that permits the use of a plurality of valves for a given combustion chamber while operating all of the valves through a simplified camshaft arrangement. Some of the valves are operated directly by the cam lobes and others are operated by rocker arms. In addition, an embodiment is disclosed wherein a two rocker arm arrangement is employed for operating certain valves.

Several embodiments of valve actuating mechanisms for internal combustion engines that facilitate the use of more intake and/or exhaust valves than the other type of valve. This is accomplished by embodying lifters or tappets that have a smaller diameter for the valves having the greater number.

An arrangement for rotatably supporting first and second camshafts associated with first and second series of plural valves for the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A cylinder head is affixed to the cylinder block by fastening means that are equally spaced with respect to the cylinder bores while the camshafts are offset at different distances from the cylinder bore axis on opposite sides of the cylinder head. The fastening arrangement includes cam carriers and bearing caps that support the respective camshafts and which are spaced so as to avoid interference with each other and to provide uniform tightening loads.

An engine employing oval pistons and cylinders with dual connecting rods for each piston. The connecting rods are connected to each piston by a common wrist pin and to a composite crankshaft. The crankshaft includes a main bearing between the connecting rods of each of the pistons. It also includes a middle portion associated with each piston including two crank pins and the shaft therebetween for receipt of the centrally located main bearing.

A four-cycle internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder bore formed in a cylinder block, a piston slidably fitted in the cylinder bore, and a combustion chamber formed in a cylinder head above the piston. The bore, piston and combustion chamber have an elongated non-circular cross-section which, for example, can be of elongated circular or elliptical shape. An intake system for fuel mixture is connected to the combustion chamber to supply fuel mixture to a central region of the combustion chamber and an exhaust system is connected to each end of the combustion chamber in an outer region for discharge of exhaust gases.
