Abstract: This invention relates to a method of making a coated article for use in insulating glass (IG) window units, vehicle windows, or the like. The coated article typically includes a low-E coated article, including a low-E (low emissivity) coating supported by a glass substrate. In certain example embodiments, rapid heating (not sufficient for tempering or heat bending) of the coated article is utilized in order to reduce the emissivity and/or sheet resistance of the coated article without significantly damaging the infrared (IR) reflecting layer(s) of the coating, thereby activating the coated article. The glass of the coated article does not become too hot during such rapid heating.

Abstract: A method for depositing a coating onto a glass substrate for adhesive bonding. The process comprises depositing a coating where the surface is cleaned during a first time period, and depositing a high-velocity impact polymer reaction coating on the surface at ambient air pressure during a second time period using an atmospheric pressure air plasma. The coated glass can be bonded using a CASE compound, consisting of coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, and combinations thereof. The opposing surface of the CASE compound is adjacent to a frame, such as an automotive vehicle windshield flange.

Abstract: A thermal actuator for a micro-electromechanical device such as an inkjet printer nozzle. The actuator has: (a) a base element; (b) a cantilevered element including a thermo-mechanical bender portion extending from the base element and a free end tip residing in a first position, the thermo-mechanical bender portion having a base end adjacent the base element and a free end adjacent the free end tip; and (c) apparatus adapted to apply a heat pulse having a spatial thermal pattern directly to the thermo-mechanical bender portion, causing the deflection of the free end tip of the cantilevered element to a second position, and wherein said spatial thermal pattern results in a substantially greater temperature increase of the base end than the free end of the thermo-mechanical bender portion. By designing the actuator such that the material with a high coefficient of thermal expansion heats with a predetermined spatial thermal pattern concentrated toward the base of the cantilever beam, the paddle end movement is greater and faster. The ink above the paddle is given the necessary pressure such that the ink in the bulging meniscus has sufficient momentum to break the surface tension and form a drop.
