Abstract: An electronic device may have a flexible portion that allows the device to be folded. The device may have a flexible display. The flexible display may have edge portions that are joined along a flexible middle portion. The flexible middle portion may overlap a bend axis and may be bent about the bend axis. Flexibility enhancement regions may be formed in a backing layer, polarizer layer, organic-light-emitting display layer, and other display layers to enhance flexibility for the middle portion. The device may have a display with a flexible tail that is bent about a bend axis. Metal trace on the flexible display may include metal trace strips that serve as power lines. Flexibility enhancement regions such as slot-shaped openings or other openings may be formed in the metal trace strips to enhance flexibility.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a flexible display such as an organic light-emitting diode display. A strain sensing resistor may be formed on a bent tail portion of the flexible display to gather strain measurements. Resistance measurement circuitry in a display driver integrated circuit may make resistance measurements on the strain sensing resistor and a temperature compensation resistor to measure strain. A crack detection line may be formed from an elongated pair of traces that are coupled at their ends to form a loop. The crack detection line may run along a peripheral edge of the flexible display. Crack detection circuitry may monitor the resistance of the crack detection line to detect cracks. The crack detection circuitry may include switches that adjust the length of the crack detection line and thereby allow resistances to be measured for different segments of the line.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a color sensing ambient light sensor. The color sensing ambient light sensor may measure the color of ambient light. Control circuitry in the electronic device may use information from the color sensing ambient light sensor in adjusting a display in the electronic device or taking other action. The color sensing ambient light sensor may have light detectors with different spectral responses. A test system may be used to calibrate the color sensing light sensor. The test system may have a tunable light source with light-emitting diodes that are turned on in sequence while gathering measured responses from the detectors. Numerical optimization techniques may be used to produce final versions of the spectral responses for the light detectors from the measured responses and corresponding calibration data that is stored in the electronic device.

Abstract: A flexible substrate may have one or more bends. A bend in a flexible substrate may be made along a bend axis. Conductive traces in the flexible substrate may have elongated shapes. Each conductive trace may extend along a longitudinal axis that is perpendicular to the bend axis. Metal or other conductive materials may form the conductive traces. The traces may be formed from a chain of linked segments. Each segment may have patterned trace portions that surround one, two, or more than two openings. Traces may also be formed that have multiple layers of metal or other conductive material interconnected using vias. A polymer layer may cover the traces to align a neutral stress plane with the traces and to serve as a moisture barrier layer.

Abstract: A display may have an array of pixels. The array of pixels may have a shape such as a circular shape or other shape with a curved edge. Display driver circuitry may supply data signals to the pixels using folded vertical data lines and bisected horizontal gate lines. Each folded vertical lines may have a first segment in a left half of the array and a second segment in a right half of the display. Curved coupling segments in an inactive area of the display may be used in joining the first and second segments. Display driver circuits may be provided in top and bottom portions of the inactive area to supply data to respective top and bottom portions of the array. Gate driver output buffers may have different strengths in different rows of the array.

Abstract: A display may have an array of organic light-emitting diodes that form an active area on a flexible substrate. Metal traces may extend between the active area and an inactive area of the flexible substrate. Display driver circuitry such as a display driver integrated circuit may be attached to a flexible printed circuit that is attached to the flexible substrate in the inactive area. The metal traces may extend across a bend region in the flexible substrate. The flexible substrate may be bent in the bend region. The flexible substrate may be locally thinned in the bend region. A neutral stress plane adjustment layer may cover the metal traces in the bend region. The neutral stress plane adjustment layer may include polymer layers such as an encapsulation layer, a pixel definition layer, a planarization layer, and a layer that covers a pixel definition layer and planarization layer.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a hinge that allows the device to be flexed about a bend axis. A display may span the bend axis. The device may have a stainless steel and/or carbon fiber reinforced polymer layer with slots. The slots may overlap the bend axis. The slots may have at least one property that varies in a non-linear manner as a function of position on the layer. The device may include an adhesive layer with a cutout that overlaps the slots. An interface that defines the cutout may have a plurality of recesses with varying depths. A flexible printed circuit may be attached to an edge of the display panel. The display cover layer may overlap a bonding region between the flexible printed circuit and the edge of the display panel. A UV-curable gap filler may be interposed between the flexible printed circuit and the display cover layer.

Abstract: A display may have one or more bent portions. To increase the magnitude of curvature in a display and/or to allow for compound curvature in the display, a display panel may be partially formed in a planar state. The partial display panel is then bent to have desired curvature. After the partial display panel is bent, additional display components that are susceptible to damage during the bending process may be added to complete the display panel. A flexible printed circuit may be formed directly on the display panel using precise deposition of conductive material. By forming the flexible printed circuit layer-by-layer directly on the display panel, no substantive pressure needs to be applied to the display panel. Electrical connections may therefore be made to the display panel in regions of the display with high levels of curvature and/or with compound curvature without causing front-of-screen artifacts for the display panel.
