Abstract:
A mass filter is disclosed comprising an orthogonal acceleration electrode 9. Ions entering the mass filter are orthogonally accelerated by the orthogonal acceleration electrode 9 in a primary acceleration region 2 and enter a flight region 3. The ions 6,7,8 are then reflected by a reflectron 4 and are directed towards an exit region of the mass filter. Ions having a desired mass to charge ratio are arranged to arrive in the primary acceleration region 2 at a time when a voltage pulse applied to the orthogonal acceleration electrode 9 falls from a maximum to zero. Ions having a desired mass to charge ratio are orthogonally decelerated such that they have a zero component of velocity in the orthogonal direction. Accordingly, ions having a desired mass to charge ratio exit the mass filter in an axial direction.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) in which a collision cell is employed to selectively remove unwanted artefact ions from an ion beam by causing them to interact with a reagent gas. The present invention provides a first evacuated chamber (6) at high vacuum located between an expansion chamber (3) and a second evacuated chamber (20) containing the collision cell (24). The first evacuated chamber (6) includes a first ion optical device (17). The collision cell (24) contains a second ion optical device (25). The provision of the first evacuated chamber (5) reduces the gas load on the collision cell (24), by minimising the residual pressure within the collision cell (24) that is attributable to the gas load from the plasma source (1). This serves to minimise the formation, or re-formation, of unwanted artefact ions in the collision cell (24).
Abstract:
A mass spectrometer includes an ion detector positioned upstream of a quadrupole mass filter/analyser. Ions are passed through the quadrupole mass filter/analyser, stored in an ion trap and then passed back through the same mass filter/analyser before being detected by the upstream ion detector. With this arrangement, MS/MS experiments can be performed using an apparatus having only a single mass filter/analyser.
Abstract:
A device and method for selectively establishing predetermined orbits, relative to an axis, for ions of a first mass/charge ratio (m1), requires crossing an electric field with a substantially uniform magnetic field (E×B). The magnetic field is oriented along the axis and the electric field has both a d.c. voltage component (∇&PHgr;0) and an a.c. voltage component (∇&PHgr;1). In operation, voltage &PHgr;0 is fixed to place the ions m1 on confined orbits around the axis when &PHgr;1 is zero. On the other hand, when &PHgr;1 is tuned to a predetermined value, the ions m1 are ejected away from the axis. With E×B established in a chamber, the ions m1 will pass through the chamber when on confined orbits (&PHgr;1=0), and they will be ejected into the wall of the chamber when on unconfined orbits (&PHgr;1=predetermined value).
Abstract:
The invention relates to a tandem mass spectrometer and a method for scanning daughter ion spectra which uses a quadrupole mass spectrometer for selection of parent ions and another one for the measurement of the daughter ions. The invention consists of not using a conventional third quadrupole filter as a collision cell for fragmentation of the parent ions but an ion guide system with helically coiled wires, especially in the form of a double helix, in which the ions can be completely decelerated and can be actively fed to the outlet aperture.
Abstract:
A method is provided of operating a mass spectrometer having first and second rod sets, which can be a focusing set of rods and an analysis rod set, the second rod set being downstream from the first rod set at an outlet of a spectrometer. Ions are directed into the first rod set and an RF voltage applied to the two rod sets, the RF voltage can be the same or different for the two rod sets. A low level DC voltage is applied to the first rod set sufficient to reduce a continuum background ion signal, thereby to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrometer.
Abstract:
A rotating field mass and velocity analyzer having a cell with four walls, time dependent RF potentials that are applied to each wall, and a detector. The time dependent RF potentials create an RF field in the cell which effectively rotates within the cell. An ion beam is accelerated into the cell and the rotating RF field disperses the incident ion beam according to the mass-to-charge (m/e) ratio and velocity distribution present in the ion beam. The ions of the beam either collide with the ion detector or deflect away from the ion detector, depending on the m/e, RF amplitude, and RF frequency. The detector counts the incident ions to determine the m/e and velocity distribution in the ion beam.
Abstract:
A quadrupole mass spectrometer includes means for measuring total ion current having an electron repeller cage disposed about an electron source filament. The electron repeller cage repels electrons emitted by the electron source filament, urging them away from both the repeller and the filament, while also attracting positive ions. When the positive ions contact the electron repeller cage, a current is induced that is measured at the electron repeller cage. The measured current represents total ion current transmitted through the spectrometer. Thus, the need to include a total pressure measurement plate to measure total ion current is eliminated, and since the ion-exposed surface area of the electron repeller cage is greater than the ion-exposed surface area of the total pressure measurement plate, the invention provides improved total pressure measurement sensitivity.
Abstract:
An improved radio frequency (RF) generator for use with a quadrupole mass analyzer is disclosed wherein a ramp of RF at constant frequency is provided by developing a difference signal between the output of the circuit and a control ramp input. The error signal is modulated by the desired frequency supplied from an oscillator and amplified by a push-pull arrangement. The amplified signal is applied to a series resonant tuned circuit which directly supplies the quadrupole rods.
