Abstract:
A method of coating a travelling web with at least one layer of a liquid coating composition, includes the steps of moving the web along a path through a coating zone and forming at the coating zone a free-falling vertical curtain which extends transversely of the path and impinges the travelling web to deposit thereon a coating. The free-falling curtain is composed of at least two separately formed free-falling partial curtains which are joined edge to edge, one partial curtain constituting an edge region of the integral curtain and the other or others constituting a central region and another edge region of the integral curtain.
Abstract:
In a method of coating a support with a liquid coating composition in which the coating composition is applied by impingement of a free-falling curtain of coating composition onto the surface of the moving support, formation of edge beads along the edges of the coating which are of greater thickness than the remainder of the coating is effectively avoided by use of laterally adjustable edge guides which are initially positioned so as to establish a stable free-falling curtain and then moved laterally to a position in which they are slightly further apart, whereby the coating assumes a uniform thickness. The method of this invention is useful in both single-layer and multiple-layer curtain coating and are especially advantageous in the manufacture of photographic film and photographic paper in view of the need for precisely uniform thickness over the entire coated area.
Abstract:
A coating composition includes a first polymer and a second polymer that are incompatible and non-reactive with one another. The absolute value of the difference between the refractive index of the first polymer and the refractive index of the second polymer is about 0 to about 0.01. The first polymer and the second polymer are soluble in a carrier liquid that is a good solvent for the first polymer and a poor solvent for the second polymer. The carrier liquid is removed from the coating layer to spinodally decompose the mixture of the first polymer and the second polymer in an amount sufficient to form a substantially continuous first phase with a predominant amount of the first polymer and a substantially discontinuous second phase with a predominant amount the second polymer. At least 70% of the second phase includes droplets with an aspect ratio, when viewed in the plane of the surface of the substrate, of less than about 3.
Abstract:
A disclosed digital media device operational at user premises to receive media signals from a media source for presentation via endpoint devices such as a television display. The digital media device can include gateway and digital media management functionality and can be referred to as a gateway and digital media device. The device offers application services obtained over a wide area network and a user premises network. The digital media device may form a composite signal from the media signal and application service information, for example, for a composite audio and/or video signal for television type presentation to the user. The digital media device may receive a selection signal based on the presentation, for transmission to the application service provider device or to the media source. The media device also offers a GUI presenting a moveable arrangement of icons for selectively accessing application services.
Abstract:
A main object of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing a binder-containing inorganic fiber molded body where localization of the binder is inhibited. The present invention achieves the object by providing a method for manufacturing a binder-containing inorganic fiber molded body including steps of: a binder solution coating step of coating an inorganic fiber molded body with a binder solution, and a liquid coating step of coating the inorganic fiber molded body coated with the binder solution with a liquid of which boiling point is less than 120° C.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for producing high-gloss surfaces on at least one portion of a substrate area, where the steps comprise (a) applying a layer made of a melt to at least one portion of the substrate area; (b) polishing of the applied layer of melt; (c) applying at least one lacquer layer to the polished layer of melt by means of a curtain-coating process; and (d) hardening the layer structure applied. The invention further relates to articles obtainable by this type of process.
Abstract:
Magnesium phosphate cement binder systems and method for providing magnesium phosphate cements are described. In an embodiment, a magnesium phosphate cement binder system may include magnesium oxide that has been calcined at a temperature of between about 900° F. to about 1800° F. The magnesium phosphate cement binder system may also include a phosphate material. Other formulations, compositions, and methods are also described.
