Methods of making biodegradable polymeric devices, such as stents, with one or more modifications to alter the degradation rate, and the biodegradable polymeric devices are described. Modifications include blending of two polymers, one with a different degradation rate, inclusion of additives to alter the degradation rate, and the use of polymers of a high polydispersity.

According to certain techniques, a system for coating a substrate includes a preparation component, a coating component, and a curing component. The preparation component includes a plasma applicator that irradiates the substrate with plasma to form a prepared substrate. The coating component coats the prepared substrate with a coating medium to form a coated substrate. The coating component includes a coating head that receives the coating medium from a reservoir and applies the coating medium to the prepared substrate to form the coated substrate. The coating component includes a vacuum that removes an excess amount of the coating medium from the coated substrate. The curing component includes at least one ultraviolet emitter and irradiates the coated substrate with ultraviolet energy to form a cured substrate.

The bendable tube redirectionally engages the guide surface intermediate the first and second longitudinal ends of the tube. The carriage is vertically repositionable and cooperatively engages the tube proximate the first longitudinal end of the tube, whereby vertical repositioning of the carriage effects a change in the vertical distance between the first and second longitudinal ends of the tube. The support assembly releasably suspends an elongate workpiece for introduction of at least a portion of the workpiece into the tube through the first longitudinal end of the coating tube as the carriage is vertically repositioned upwards towards the support assembly.

A process and apparatus for making highly adhesive plastic top coatings, more particularly of polyurethane or thermoplastic polyester, on metallic substrates, particularly of braided or plaited wire layers, as pressure substrate, having an inner core of plastic, particularly a polymer of thermoplastic plastic, surrounded by the substrate, the plastic top coating being extruded in an extruder head onto the substrate, characterized in that the substrate having openings is prestressed then heated to approximately the temperature of the extrudate or the extruder head, so that there is generated in the inner core a radially directed prestress which forces at least part of the material thereof, while softening, through the openings in the substrate, and that thereafter a vacuum is created around the substrate or between the head and the flexible tube and that simultaneously with, or immediately after, the creation of the vacuum the top coating fusing intimately and/or bonding together with the material of the inner core that passes through the openings in the substrate.
