Abstract: An internal combustion engine in which each cylinder has a plurality of inlet ports (17,19) and a plurality of outlet ports (14), each port being openable and closeable by means of a respective valve (12,13,11). The inlet and outlet valves (12,13,11) are disposed with their center lines substantially on opposite sides of a cylinder center plane (16) and angled generally towards said center plane (16). There are three, or possibly more, valves on at least one of said sides, arranged with two outer valves (12) separated by one, or possibly more, inner valve (13). The angle of inclination with respect to said center plane (16) for the outer valves (12) is less than or equal to the angle of inclination for the inner valve (13). The valves are preferably operated directly with a separate camshaft (18,20,15) being provided for each one or more valves inclined at the same angle.

Abstract: According to the present invention there is provided a poppet valve assembly comprising a plurality of simultaneously operated poppet valve members slidably mounted for movement between their open and closed positions by their stems the axes of which are not all parallel, a rocker mounted for rocking movement about a rocking axis transverse to each valve stem axis, the rocker having a valve stem engaging tappet element for each valve for engaging an end face of the respective valve stem, the respective lengths of the valve stems, being such that the tappet elements are not all in the same plane through the rocker axis in such a manner that simultaneously for each valve, in an intermediate part of the valve lift travel, a line from the rocker axis to the point of engagement of the tappet element with the end face of the valve stem is perpendicular to the valve stem axis.

Abstract: A four cycle internal combustion engine has a cylinder, a piston slidable therein, intake and exhaust valves, a pair of intake passages, and an exhaust passage. There are at least three intake valves, and the intake passages are connected so that each discharges to an intake valve adjacent to the central axis of the cylinder, and in addition also to respective other intake valves on the opposite sides of an axis of symmetry. The plural intake valves, and if desired also the plural exhaust valves, are simultaneously activated because they are connected to a respective plate that is contacted by an actuating cam. The respective valve stems are inclined in a V shaped configuration to accommodate a plug between them, and a central one of the valves can be offset (advanced) into the combustion chamber to improve the combustion characteristics.

Intake valves in a series are positioned in a straight line on one side of and parallel to a central plane extending through the longest dimension of each oblong cylinder. Exhaust valves in a series are positioned in a straight line on the other side of and parallel to that central plane. Abstract: Embodiments of valve operating mechanisms for operating the poppet valve of an internal combustion engine. Each embodiment includes a rotating cam member having a cam lobe surface engaged with a follower for actuating the poppet valve. The profile of the cam surface is such so that the absolute value of the jerk of the valve acceleration in the vicinity of maximum valve lift is smaller than the absolute value of the jerk of the valve in areas adjacent to the area of maximum valve lift. The load between the cam surface and the follower at the point of maximum lift is greater than the load during the time of at least one of the approach to maximum lift and the closing of the valve after the maximum lift because the tip of the nose of the cam has a greater effective radius than on the sides adjacent the tip. This reduces stress and permits greater engine speeds without valve float.
