A method for inhibiting the deposition of wax in an oil well producing a wax-containing petroleum from a subterranean formation comprises injecting into the oil pool at the base of said well a copolymer comprised of ethylene and vinyl acetate and having an average molecular weight between about 15,000 and about 35,000.

Polymers or copolymers containing an n-alkyl ester of a mono-ethylenically unsaturated C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 mono- or dicarboxylic acid wherein the average number of carbon atoms in the n-alkyl groups is from 12 to 14, and which contain no more than 10 wt. % of comonomer containing alkyl groups containing more than 14 carbon atoms and preferably no more than 20 wt. % of comonomer in which the alkyl group contains fewer than 12 carbon atoms are low temperature flow improvers for distillate fuels improving flow and filterability as well as lowering cloud point.

The distillate fuel has added thereto:A. an amorphous, normally solid, essentially saturated hydrocarbon fraction substantially free of normal paraffin hydrocarbons;B. a wax modifying random copolymer of ethylene and an unsaturated ester; andC. an ether.

A fuel composition for internal combustion engines, and more particularly, a fuel composition for internal combustion engines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per liter of fuel is described. The fuel composition comprises a major amount of a liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a minor, property improving amount of(A) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble alkali or alkaline earth metal-containing composition, and(B) at least one hydrocarbon-soluble ashless dispersant.When a mixture of the metal-containing composition (A) and the ashless dispersant (B) are incorporated into gasolines containing less than about 0.5 gram of lead per liter of fuel, the treated fuel exhibits improved stability and water tolerance, and when the unleaded or low lead-containing fuels of the present invention are utilized in internal combustion engines, there is a significant reduction in valve seat recession. Methods of reducing valve seat recession in internal combustion engines utilizing lead free or low lead-containing fuels also are described.

A unique lubricating, corrosion inhibiting and rust inhibiting additive for alcohol fuels having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms is disclosed. The lubricating additive comprises a mixture consisting essentially of a lubricant, an emulsifying agent, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and organic solvents formulated to obtain a mixture having a specific gravity substantially equivalent to that of the alcohol in which the lubricating additive will be mixed. The invention further comprises an alcohol fuel-lubricating additive mixture for use as a fuel in internal combustion engines as well as methods for preparing such mixtures.

A composition comprising:(A) a first component selected from the group consisting of:(i) an oil-soluble ethylene backbone polymer having a number average molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 50,000;(ii) a hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol of the formula(R*).sub.a --AR--(OH).sub.b I wherein R* is a hydrocarbyl group selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl groups of from about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms and polymers of at least 30 carbon atoms, Ar is an aromatic moiety having 0 to 4 optional substituents selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, nitro, halo or combinations of two or more of said optional substituents, and a and b are each independently an integer of 1 up to 5 times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a and b does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar;(iii) mixtures of (i) and (ii); and(B) as a second component, the reaction product of (B)(I) a hydrocarbyl-substituted carboxylic acylating agent with (B)(II) one or more amines, one or more alcohols, or a mixture of one or more amines and/or one or more alcohols, the hydrocarbyl substituent of said agent (B)(I) being selected from the group consisting of(i') one or more mono-olefins of from about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms;(ii') mixtures of one or more mono-olefins of from about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms with one or more olefin polymers of at least 30 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of polymers of mono-1-olefins of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, or the chlorinated or brominated analogs of such polymers; and(iii') one or more olefin polymers of at least 30 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of(a) polymers of mono-olefins of from about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms;(b) interpolymers of mono-1-olefins of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms with mono-olefins of from about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms;(c) one or more mixtures of homopolymers and/or interpolymers of mono-1-olefins of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms with homopolymers and/or interpolymers of mono-olefins of from about 8 to about 30 carbon atoms; and(d) chlorinated or brominated analogs of (a), (b), or (c).

An additive concentrate for incorporation into wax containing petroleum fuel oil compositions to improve low temperature flow properties comprising an oil solution containing:(a) 3% to 90 wt. % of a C.sub.30 -C.sub.300 oil-soluble nitrogen compound wax crystal growth inhibitor having at least one straight C8-C40 alkyl chain and partial esters,and(b) at least one mole per mole of (a) of an organic acid capable of hydrogen bonding with (a) to improve the solubility of (a) in the oil.

Cold flow properties of distillate fuel such as diesel fuel are improved by the addition of a small amount of a tetrapolymer of ethylene, a C.sub.3-32 .alpha.-olefin (e.g. hexene-1), vinyl ester of a C.sub.1-12 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (e.g. vinyl acetate) and a vinyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. styrene) having an average molecular weight of 2,000-5,000.
Abstract:
Distillate fuels, particularly those having a relatively high final boiling point, are significantly improved in their flow and filterability properties utilizing a two component additive consisting of 25 to 95 wt. % preferably 50 to 90 wt. % of C.sub.30 -C.sub.300 oil-soluble nitrogen compound being an amide or amine salt of an aromatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid and 75 to 5 wt. % preferably 10 to 50 wt. % of a certain category of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers.
