Abstract:
A heat-curable electrocoating composition containing a polymer having pendant amine groups and a bis-maleimide cross-linking agent can be electrodeposited onto a cathode substrate disposed within an aqueous electrocoating bath. The amine groups of the polymer are protonated to render the polymer water-dispersible prior to electrodeposition. Upon electrodeposition, the amine groups become de-protonated and cross-link with the bis-maleimide upon heating to form a fully cured electrodeposited coating on the cathode substrate.
Abstract:
Hydrolyzed Diels-Alder adducts of ocimenol have been synthesized and found to have good olfactory and perfumery properties. The hydrolyzed adducts are made by reacting ocimenol and an Alpha , Beta - unsaturated carbonyl compound, preferably acrolein, methacrolein or crotonaldehyde, in a Diels-Alder reaction, followed by hydrolysis.
Abstract:
An improved process for laser or UV curing of pigmented-binder systems comprising ethylenically unsaturated polymers containing at least about 0.05 weight parts of opacifying pigment per weight part of binder wherein the pigmented-binder system includes from about 0.5% up to about 3% of a halogenated derivative of naphthalene in combination with about 0.1 to 2% aromatic amino carbonyl photosensitizers and from about 0.5% to 2% aromatic ketone or aldehyde photosensitizers. The sensitized binder system is a substantially improved system suitable for curing by ultraviolet or laser energy sources.

New m-(3-alkoxyureido and 3-alkoxythioureido)phenyl carbamates wherein at least one valence of the carbamate nitrogen is satisfied by a halogen-substituted lower alkyl group are shown to be selective herbicides.
Abstract:
New meta-3-alkylated ureido or thioureido phenyl carbamates and thiocarbamates wherein at least one valence of the carbamate nitrogen is satisfied by a halogen-substituted lower alkyl group are shown to be selective herbicides.
Abstract:
Process and apparatus for polymerizing oxygen-inhibited ultraviolet photopolymerizable resin-forming material such as a film is shown. The apparatus comprises a pair of U.V. light sources, one being a flash photolysis source, the other a sustained photolysis source, both disposed for irradiating said mass as it abides in an atmosphere such as air which tends to inhibit such polymerization. The process has two essential phases, a superficial phase and a profound phase, performed simultaneously or one in advance of and as preparation for the other. The profound phase is performed with sustained irradiation effective for substantially completely polymerizing said material except for inhibition of polymerization at the surface thereof due to said atmosphere. The superficial phase is performed with flash irradiation effective for forming a tack-free skin over said material. Said skin helps to protect the less fully polymerized material therebelow from oxygen inhibition when such superficial phase is performed first or simultaneously with the other phase. When such superficial phase is performed after the profound phase, said superficial phase acts to complete polymerization of said material throughout its thickness.
Abstract:
An improved electroslag refining (ESR) flux composition and process for making same are shown. The instant ESR flux compositions are made from particulate batch materials providing at least alumina, a fluoride and alkaline earth metal oxide, including calcium oxide, by the process described to yield a product exhibiting a substantially uniform fusion characteristic and to be substantially free of contamination from outside sources. The improvement in process comprises subjecting a substantially homogeneous mixture of batch materials, advantageously pelletized, to heat reaction at a temperature short of their complete fusion and in the range of about 1,900*2,400* F, generally most suitably until the free calcium oxide in the resulting product is below about 1 1/2 %.

Abstract:
Anti-microbial compositions comprising an inert carrier and a defined class of di-aryl nitrones are described. The compositions are advantageous in that they have high fungicidal activity against a substantially broad spectrum of plant pathogenic fungi, while at the same time the compositions are essentially nonphytotoxic to selected crops and ornamental plants in the fungicidally active amounts employed. Also described are processes for controlling plant pathogens in soil by soil treatment or by treatment of the crop plant seeds.
