Abstract: A method of mass spectrometry is disclosed comprising directing first photons from a laser onto ions located within a 2D or linear ion guide or ion trap. The frequency of the first photons is scanned and first photons and/or second photons emitted by the ions are detected. The ions are then mass analysed using a Time of Flight mass analyser.

Abstract: An ion mobility separator and a method of separating ions according to their ion mobility are disclosed. An RF ion guide is provided having a plurality of electrodes that are arranged to form an ion guiding path that extends in a closed loop. RF voltages are supplied to at least some of the electrodes in order to confine ions within said ion guiding path. A DC voltage gradient is maintained along at least a portion of a longitudinal axis of the ion guide, wherein the voltage gradient urges ions to undergo one or more cycles around the ion guide and thus causes the ions to separate according to their ion mobility as the ions pass along the ion guide. The closed loop ion guide enables the resolution of the ion mobility separator to be increased without necessitating a large device, since the drift length through the device can be increased by causing the ions to undergo multiple cycles around the device.

Abstract: A method of analysing ions is disclosed comprising performing an initial multi-dimensional survey scan comprising separating parent ions according to a first physico-chemical property and separating the parent ions according to a second physico-chemical property. At least one parent ion of interest from the initial multi-dimensional survey scan is determined, the at least one parent ion of interest having a first value or range of the first physico-chemical property and a second value or range of the second physico-chemical property. Then, during a subsequent single cycle of separation, the method further comprises separating parent ions according to the first physico-chemical property. If the parent ions have a value or range of the first physico-chemical property which corresponds with the first value or range, then the method further comprises selecting parent ions of interest having a value or range of the first physico-chemical property which corresponds with the first value or range and which also have a value or range of the second physico-chemical property which corresponds with the second value or range. If the parent ions have a value or range of the first physico-chemical property which does not correspond with the first value or range then the method further comprises separating the parent ions according to the first physico-chemical property and separating the parent ions according to the second physico-chemical property.

Abstract: A method of analysing ions is disclosed comprising performing an initial multi-dimensional survey scan comprising separating parent ions according to a first physico-chemical property (e.g. ion mobility) and then separating the parent ions according to a second physico-chemical property (e.g. mass to charge ratio). A plurality of parent ions of interest are then determined from the initial multi-dimensional survey scan. Once parent ions of interest have been determined, the plurality of parent ions of interest are sequentially selected based upon the first and second physico-chemical properties during a single cycle of separation. The parent ions of interest may then be fragmented and corresponding fragment ions may then be mass analysed.

Abstract: A method of mass spectrometry is disclosed comprising separating ions temporally in a first device and analysing the mass or mass to charge ratio of the ions or of product or fragment ions derived from the ions in a mass or mass to charge ratio analyser disposed downstream of the first device. The method further comprises obtaining a first set of drift times for the ions through the first device by measuring ion arrival times and determining the transit time of the ions and/or of the product or fragment ions through one or more intermediate regions or devices disposed between the first device and the mass to charge ratio analyser. The method further comprises obtaining a second set of drift times for the ions through the first device by correcting the first set of drift times to account for the determined transit times.

Abstract: An ion guide comprises a first ion guide portion that forms a first ion guiding path and a second ion guide portion that forms a second ion guiding path. A first device applies a plurality of different first voltages or potentials to the electrodes of the first ion guide portion in order to generate an electric field that directs ions from the first ion guiding path of the first ion guide portion into the second ion guiding path of the second ion guide portion. The use of plural different first voltages can provide a controlled transfer of ions from the first ion guiding path into the second ion guiding path.

Abstract: A method of mass spectrometry is disclosed comprising separating first ions according to a first physico-chemical property in a first separator wherein at least some of the first ions undergo a different number of cycles or passes within the separator and separating the first ions which emerge from the first separator according to a second physico-chemical property wherein the second physico-chemical property is correlated with the first physico-chemical property. The method further comprises determining the second physico-chemical property of the first ions and determining, assigning or de-convolving the first physico-chemical property of the first ions based upon the determined second physico-chemical property of the first ions.

Abstract: An ion trapping system is disclosed comprising an ion urging system for urging ions to spread out within an ion trapping region. Alternatively, the ion trapping system may deflect ions such that ions enter the ion trapping region at different locations. Alternatively, an ion deflector may be arranged upstream of, or at the entrance to, the ion trapping region, for deflecting ions such that ions enter the ion trapping region with different speeds so that the ions spread out within the ion trapping region.
