Abstract:
The present invention provides a process for preparing an oil soluble product comprising reacting: (a) an olefin copolymer having a number average molecular weight of more than about 5000 functionalised with an acylating agent; (b) an acylating agent substituted with a hydrocarbyl group having a number average molecular weight of about 350 to about 5000; and (c) a compound selected from the group consisting of (i) a polyamine; (ii) a polyol; and (iii) an aminoalcohol, wherein the oil soluble product has a mole ratio of acylating agents (a) to (b) of 1:greater than 2. The invention further provides the use of the oil soluble product in a lubricating composition for lubricating an internal combustion engine.

Hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic compositions and derivatives thereof useful as dispersant/viscosity improvers for lubricating oil and fuel compositions. Carboxylic compositions are derived from (A) a hydrocarbon polymer having Mn ranging from about 20,000 to about 500,000, and (B) an alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic compound prepared by reacting (1) an active methylene compound of the formula (I), and (2) a carbonyl compound of the general formula (II), wherein R is H or hydrocarbyl and R is a member of the group consisting of H, hydrocarbyl and (III), wherein each R' is independently R or OR and each R is, independently, H or a hydrocarbyl group; and lower alkyl acetals, ketals, hemiacetals and hemiketals of the carbonyl compound (2). A process for reacting relatively small hydrophilic carboxylic molecules with relatively large, hydrophobic hydrocarbon based molecules, said process comprising conducting the reacting in the presence of a sulfonic acid catalyst having solubilizing properties. In a preferred embodiment the large hydrophobic molecule comprises at least one member of the group consisting of (1) olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons containing at least about 10 carbon atoms and (2) aliphatic hydrocarbyl group substituted hydroxy aromatic compounds wherein the aliphatic hydrocarbyl group contains at least 12 carbon atoms and the small hydrophilic molecule comprises a carboxylic reactant selected from the group consisting of compounds of the formula: R C(O)(R )nC(O)OR ; wherein each of R and R is independently H or a hydrocarbyl group, R is a divalent hydrocarbylene group, and n is 0 or 1, and reactive sources thereof.

The disclosed invention relates to a composition comprising a partially dehydrated product made by: (I) reacting (A) a hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acid or anhydride with (B) a polyol, a polyamine, a hydroxyamine, or a mixture of two or more thereof, to form a first intermediate product comprising: an ester, partial ester or mixture thereof when (B) is a polyol; an amide, imide, salt, amide/salt, partial amide or mixture of two or more thereof when (B) is a polyamine; or an ester, partial ester, amide, partial amide, amide/salt, imide, ester/salt, salt or a mixture of two or more thereof when (B) is a hydroxyamine, a mixture of a polyol and a polyamine, a mixture of a polyol and a hydroxyamine, or a mixture of a polyamine and a hydroxyamine, or a mixture of a polyol, a polyamine and a hydroxyamine; the hydrocarbyl substituent of said acid or anhydride having an average of about 8 to about 200 carbon atoms; and (II) heating said first intermediate product at an effective temperature to form a second intermediate product with water of reaction being formed, and separating a portion of said water of reaction from said second intermediate product, when (A) is said succinic anhydride the amount of water of reaction that is separated is from about 0.2 to about 0.9 equivalents of said water of reaction per equivalent of said succinic anhydride, when (A) is said succinic acid the amount of water of reaction that is separated is from about 1.2 to about 1.9 moles of said water of reaction per equivalent of said succinic acid, said partially dehydrated product having a total acid number in the range of about 20 to about 100 mg of KOH/g.

SOLUTION: This working fluid contains water and a copolymer which is formed from (A) a hydrophobic monomer comprising an alkyl-substd. acrylamide of formula I and/or an acrylic ester of formula II, (B) a hydrophilic monomer comprising a sulfonic acid (salt) of formula III and/or styrenesulfonic acid or its salt, and (C) an ethylenically unsatd. branched monomer, both the molar ratio of A/B and the amt. of C being specified. SOLUTION: This nitrogen-containing ester is of a carboxyl-containing mixture polymer derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer and α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid or any anhydrate or ester thereof, wherein the mixture polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of 0.05 to 0.30 and the nitrogen-containing ester has the following pendant polar groups: (A) a carboxylic acid ester group having at least 8 aliphatic carbon atoms in the alkyl site of the ester group; and (B) a carbonylamino group derived from an amino compound having a primary or secondary amino group.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparation method for a block copolymer and to obtain block copolymers, concentrates of additives and lubricant compositions prepared by the method. SOLUTION: This method is preparation for a block copolymer including (A) a poly (vinyl aromatic) block and (B) poly (vinyl aromatic-co-acrylic) block and includes following steps; (a) a step preparing a stabilized active polymer block A by polimerizing about 5-95 mol.% filler containing at least one kind of vinyl aromatic monomer; (b) a step adding at least one acrylic monomer to a mixture of a vinyl aromatic monomer and the stabilized active polymer block of (a); and (c) a preparation of poly (vinyl aromatic-co-acrylic) block by copolymerization of the monomer by reacting with the mixture of (b) using a free radical process.
