Date Jun. 19, 1997The disclosure relates to a copolymer obtainable by radically initiated polymerization of the following: A) 70-99.9 wt. % an olefinically unsaturated C3-C5 monocarboxylic acid, an olefinically unsaturated C4-C8 dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride, or a mixture of such carboxylic acids; with B) 0.1-30 wt. % one or more multiply olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid derivatives of formula (I)Z-Y-(CHR3-CH2-X)n-R4(I)in which Z is a vinyl or allyl group or structure (a), R1, R2 are hydrogen or methyl, R3 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R4 is a singly or multiply olefinically unsaturated alkenyl or cycloalkenyl group or a singly or doubly olefinically unsaturated arylalkylene group, X is oxygen or NH, Y is oxygen, NH or N-alkyl, n is a number between 0 and 50; and C) 0-29.9 wt. % other copolymerizable monomers. The proposed copolymer can be used as a thickener or dispergent for aqueous systems.

Abstract: A process for anionic polymerization of dienes or copolymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers in the presence of hetero aromatics or a condensed aromatic is new. Independent claims are included for: (1) Preparation of impact resistant thermoplastic molding materials having a rubber-containing plastic phase dispersed in a hard vinyl aromatic matrix, in which a polydiene or copolymer is prepared, and is subjected to anionic or radical polymerization immediately or after addition of a branching or coupling agent, optionally with addition of further vinyl monomers; (2) Polydienes and copolymers in which the polymer end groups consist completely or partially of hetero aromatics, condensed aromatics, or the corresponding dihydro compounds.

Abstract: A process for the homopolymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers or copolymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers and dienes comprises polymerization of the monomers in the presence of at least an organoalkali metal, an organomagnesium compound and an organoaluminum compound. Independent claims are included for: (i) an initiator composition comprising an organoalkali metal, an organomagnesium compound and an organoaluminum compound, whereby the molar ratio of magnesium to the alkali metal is 0.2-3.8 and the molar ratio of aluminum to the alkali metal is 0.2-4; (ii) a process for the preparation of an initiator composition by dissolving the organometallic compounds in inert hydrocarbons and allowing the mixture to mature at 0-120 deg C for at least 5 minutes.

Abstract: The use of crosslinked copolymers obtainable by precipitation polymerization of monomer mixtures comprising(a) monoethylenically unsaturated C3-C8-carboxylic acids, their anhydrides or mixtures of said carboxylic acids and anhydrides,(b) compounds with at least 2 non-conjugated ethylenic double bonds in the molecule as crosslinkers and, where appropriate,(c) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which are copolymerizable with monomers (a) and (b),in the presence of free-radical polymerization initiators and from 0.1 to 20% by weight, based on the monomers used, of saturated, nonionic surface-active compounds, as stabilizer in oil-in-water emulsions in amounts of from 0.01 to 5% of the weight of the emulsions, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations based on oil-in-water emulsions which contain said precipitation polymers.
