Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hairsetting composition which no longer has disadvantages of conventional technology such as ease of wash off, the solubility, and texture of the treated hair and setting power, etc.
SOLUTION: The hairsetting composition comprises as film-formers copolymers based on t-butyl acrylate or t-butyl methacrylate having a K value of from 10 to 50 which are obtainable by free-radical polymerization of (A) from 30 to 72 wt.% of t-butyl acrylate as monomer A, (B) from 10 to 28 wt.% of methacrylic acid as monomer B, and (C) from 3 to 60 wt.% of ethyl acrylate or a mixture of the ethyl acrylate and N-t-butyl acrylamide as monomers C, (where at least one of the monomers C produces a homopolymer having a glass transition temperature of less than 30°C.), the carboxyl groups of the copolymers being partially or completely neutralized.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an agent for cosmetics, containing a specific polymer to which chromophoric benzophenone groups are bonded, excellent in water resistance and skin acknowledgement, slight in skin penetrability and useful for protecting skin and hair from ultraviolet light. SOLUTION: This agent contains a polymer having repeating structural units of formula I [R is a group of formula II [(y) is 0-6]; R is R , H, an alkali metal, ammonium; R is a 3-30C alkyl, CO-R (R is a 3-30C alkyl); X is O, CH2 ; (n) is 2-400]. The polymer is obtained by producing a copolymer from maleic anhydride and an olefin of formula III, adding an auxiliary and an additive suitable for a UV light preventing agent to the copolymer and subsequently reacting the mixture with a benzophenone derivative of formula IV.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a film-forming agent having good compatibility with a hydrocarbon-based propellant and useful for a hair cosmetic capable of simultaneously exhibiting good hair setting actions and low hygroscopicity. SOLUTION: This hair setting agent and hairdressing comprise a polymer based on N-vinylcaprolactam as a film-forming agent. The polymer is composed of 35-75 wt.% of group IV of the N-vinylcaprolactam monomer (monomer A), 25-65 wt.% of a mixture of 20-60 pts.wt. of a monomer D with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid (monomer F) and 0-4 wt.% of other radically polymerizable monomers E or 35-80 wt.% of group V of the N-vinylcaprolactam (monomer A), 20-65 wt.% of a mixture of 15-50 pts.wt. of the monomer D with 5-15 pts.wt. of an alkyl acrylate or an alkyl methacrylate monomer (monomer G) having 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and further amino group unsubstituted or substituted with a 1-4C alkyl group and 0-4 pts.wt. of the other radically polymerizable monomers E. The existing carboxyl groups of the polymer are partially or wholly neutralized with an amine. The polymer contained in the hair setting agent and hairdressing is excellent in compatibility with a nonpolar propellant and exhibits good hair setting actions and curl retention and low water absorptivity.
