Abstract: The use of copolymers obtainable by the radically initiated polymerization of A) 50 to 99.9 wt % of an olefinically unsaturated C3 to C5 monocarboxylic acid, an olefinically unsaturated C4 to C8 dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride, or a mixture of such carboxylic acids or carboxylic acid anhydrides with B) 0.1 to 50 wt % of one or more long-chained compounds with isolated multiple C-C bonds from the group (1) mono or polyunsaturated C8 to C30 monocarboxylic acids which may have additional hydroxyl groups and their alkaline metal and earth alkaline metal salts, alkyl esters, amides, sorbitane esters, glycerin esters and polyglycerin esters, (2) mono or polyunsaturated aliphatic Ca to C30 amines, (3) mono or polyunsaturated C8 to C30 alcohols and esters thereof with saturated Cl to C4 monocarboxylic acids, (4) to (C8 to C30 alkyl) vinyl ether which may incorporate up to 25 alkylene oxide units, and (5) final and medium-position Ci3 to C30 alkenes; C) 0 to 49.9 wt % of other copolymerizable monomers, and D) 0 to 10 wt % of one or more compounds with at least two olefinically unsaturated groups in the molecule as cross-linking agents, as thickening or dispersing agents, especially in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations.

Abstract: The invention concerns polymer and surfactant mixtures containing in suspended form in at least one surfactant between 1 and 50 wt.% of a polymer comprising: a) between 10 and 100 wt.% of at least one vinylimidazole or a derivative thereof, an open-chain or cyclic N-vinylamide, N-vinyloxazolidone, Nvinyltriazole or mixtures of said monomers; b) between 0 and 90 wt.% of other copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; and c) between 0 and 30 wt.% of at least one monomer with at least two ethylenically unsaturated, non-conjugated double bonds. The invention further concerns a process for preparing these mixtures by polymerization of said monomers in a surfactant, and the use of the mixtures as additives for washing agents.

Abstract: Finely powdered, water-insoluble, cross-linked polymers contain polymerised units of 1-vinyl pyrrolidone and/or 1-vinyl imidazoles having the formula (I), in which R, R1 and R2 are different or the same and stand for H, C1-C4 alkyl or phenyl, or polymerised units of 4-vinyl pyridin-N-oxide. At least 90 % by weight of these polymers have a particle size from 0.1 to 500 .mu.m. These polymers are useful as additives for washing and cleaning agents to prevent colours from migrating during washing. Also disclosed are washing and cleaning agents based on surfactants and if required builders and other usual components, said washing and cleaning agents containing from 0.1 to 10 % by weight of the disclosed water-insoluble, cross-linked polymers.

Abstract: Polymers of alkyl-1-vinylimidazoles and processes for the production thereof by the radical polymerisation of monomer mixtures comprising: (a) 10 to 100 wt. % at least one alkyl-1-vinylimidazole and (b) 0 to 90 wt. % 1vinylpyrrolidone, 1-vinylcaprolactam, 1-vinyltriazole, 1-vinylimidazole, 1vinyloxazolidinone or mixtures thereof, (c) 0 to 30 wt. % other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and (d) 0 to 10 wt. % a monomer containing at least 2 monoethylenically unsaturated double bonds, in water, and at least one C1-C4 alcohol or mixtures thereof in the presence of polymerisation regulators. Also disclosed is the use of polymers, at least 10 wt. % of which is an alkyl-1-vinylimidazole incorporated in the polymer, as an additive to detergents to prevent colour transfer during the wash.

Abstract: Aqueous copolymer dispersions are obtained by radical initiated copolymerisation or by copolymerisation initiated by the use of ionising radiation of: (A) 40 to 99 % by weight of one or several water-insoluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (B) 1 to 60 % by weight of one or several water-soluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (C) 0 to 30 % by weight of one or several ethylenically polyunsaturated monomers, in an aqueous medium in the presence of 2 to 20 % by weight, in relation to the total monomer amount, of surface active compounds as emulsifiers. These dispersions have a mean particle size from 5 to 37 nm as determined by light scattering in the aqueous medium. Such dispersions are suitable for preparing varnishes, paints and adhesives, as film-builders in hair-care cosmetic compositions, as protective media against ultraviolet light and as carriers for substances contained in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics or agrochemicals.

Abstract: The invention pertains to the use of cross-linked copolymers produced by precipitation polymerization of monomer mixtures of: (a) monoethylenically unsaturated C3 to C8 carboxylic acids, their anhydrides or mixtures of said carboxylic acids and anhydrides, (b) compounds with at least two ethylenically unsaturated, non-conjugated double bonds in the molecule as cross-linking agents, and as needed; (c) other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers that are copolymerizable with monomers (a) and (b) in the presence of radical-forming polymerization initiators and, relative to the monomers used, 0,1 to 20 wt% saturated, nonionic surface-active compounds, as stabilizers in oil-in-water emulsions, in quantities of 0.01 to 5 wt% relative to the emulsions and in cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations based on oil-in-water emulsions that contain said precipitation polymers.
