    Abstract: Ethylene homopolymers, and cooolymers with minor proportion of a 3-12C alpha mono-olefin, are prepd. by (co)polymerisation at 30-150, partic., 60-120, deg.C and 2-150, partic. 5-60, bar, using (A) catalyst comprising a support bearing Cr and Ti, both in oxidised state (B) a co-catalyst. To prepare (A), a catalyst pre-prod. (I) is first formed by (1) suspending a silicate carrier (II) having particle dia. 1-400 microns, pore vol. 0.5-3 cub. cm/g, and specific surface 100-1,000 sq. m/g in 150-5,000 pts. wt. liq. 5-8 C alkane per 100 pts. wt. (II) (2) thoroughly mixing with CrO3 of particle size less than 2,000 microns at 0.1-5 pts. wt. Cr per 100 pts. wt. (II). (3) thoroughly and continuously mixing this suspension with 3-30 pts. wt. of a 3-10 C alkanol per 100 pts. wt. (II) at 0-60 deg.C, and keeping it in this temp. range for 10-300 minutes. (4) thoro thoroughly and continuously mixing this suspension with a cpd. of formula Ti(OR)4, where R=1-12C alkyl, or aryl or cycloalky, using 0.1-10 pts.wt. Ti per 100 pts. wt. (II), at 0-60 deg.C, and keeping it in this temp. range for 5-300 minutes. (5) evaporating the suspension at not more than 150 deg. C, opt. under reduced pressure, to dryness, leaving a (I). The (I) is converted into (A) by calcining (1) at 150-300 deg. C for 60-500 minutes in a stream of dry N2 (2) then at 300-900 deg.C for 10-1,000 minutes in a dry gas stream contg. more than 10 vol.% 02, and then (3) at 50-400 deg.C for 10-300 minutes in a stream of dry N2. (B) is an amt. of a Li alkyl of formula LiR', where R'=1-12C alkyl, such that atomic ratio Cr in (A) to Li (B) is more than 1:100.

    Abstract: Titanium-contg. suspension components (I) for Ziegler catalysts are prepd. by (1) reacting TiCl4, alkyl aluminium cpd. and 2-8C alpha-olefin at less than 0 deg.C in an inert organic liquid having a viscosity greater than 5 mm2/s at the reaction temp. to give a suspension fine particle solid prod. (A); (2) isolating (A); (3) resuspending (A) in the same or a different inorganic liq.; ( ) subjecting (A) to strong mechanical shear and/or ultrasonic energy; and (5) adding 5-1000 wt.% (w.r.t. (A)) antistatic agent. The reaction temp. in (I) is pref. -30 to -10 deg.C. Pref. in (4) the shear step is for 10-80 hrs., at 0-40 deg.C and the ultrasonic energy step is for 10-30 hrs. at 0-40 deg.C. The ultra high mol.wt. ethylene homo- and copolymers are prepd. by (a) reacting ethylene or ethylene/copolymerisable cpd. at 60-125 deg.C and 5-70 bar; (b) (co)polymerising from the gas phase in a bed comprising fine (co)polymer particles having an average particle size less than or equal to 1mm, using a Ziegler catalyst contg. (I) in the presence of an anti-static agent and opt. a mol.wt. regulator, with the heat of polymerisation being removed by cooling the waste gases; and (c) continually extracting the (co)polymer. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of (I) in the gas phase prepn. of ultrahigh mol.wt. ethylene homo- and copolymer is claimed. The obtd. (co)polymers have improved impact strength without a deterioration in sinterability of the (co)polymer particles.
