Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a polymer dispersion by copolymerisation of 20 - 70 weight parts of a monomer mixture comprising c) 2.5 - 100 wt. % of one or more (meth) acrylic acid esters of monovalent, saturated C3-C8 alcohols as monomers A, and 0 - 97.5 wt. % of one or more other ethylenlically unsaturated monomers as monomers B in 100 weight parts of an aqueous solution which contains 5 - 35 wt.- % of a starch or a starch derivative, in emulsion polymerisation in the presence of an initiator containing peroxide groups, whereby the initiator and monomer can be continually dosed. In a first supply period of 5 - 60 minutes a first amount of an initiator is dosed and in a second supply period of 15 - 180 minutes a second amount of an initiator is dosed. The first amount of initiator is greater than the second amount of initiator.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing thermotropic (mono) films or composite films that contain at least one thermotropic layer that consists of a) 5 to 95 weight percent of a polymer as the component A, and b) 5 to 95 weight percent of a polymer as the component B that is different from A. A molecular mixture of components A and B has a cloud point below which the mixture is monophase and transparent and above which the mixture segregates into the components A and B. The components A and/or B may contain up to 15 mole percent of photoinitiator comonomers polymerized into the component. The layer contains optionally further components and optionally a support layer and/or a cover layer and optionally additional intermediate layers. The inventive method comprises the following steps: i) producing an intimate mixture that contains 10 to 98 weight percent of a mixture of components A, B and optionally further components and 2 to 90 weight percent of a solvent in which the components A and B are soluble, ii) removing the solvent, whereby an intimate polymer mixture from the components A and B and optionally further components is produced, iii) melting the intimate polymer mixture from step (ii) during or after the removal of the solvent, iv) optionally adding further components at a random point in time, v) shaping the mixture from components A, B and optionally further components to give a thermotropic (mono) film or, together with the support film and/or the cover layer and optionally the additional intermediate layers, to give a thermotropic composite film, and vi) optionally cross-linking said thermotropic film or said thermotropic composite film by UV radiation.

Abstract: An aqueous polyalkylene dispersion is prepared by ring opening metathesis polymerization of a poorly water soluble cyclic olefin using a micro-emulsion. An aqueous polyalkylene dispersion (I) is prepared by ring opening metathesis polymerization of (A) a poorly water soluble cyclic olefin and optionally (B) other cyclic and/or acyclic olefins in the presence of (C) a metathesis catalyst and (D) a surface active agent in addition to optionally (E) further additives. The dispersion (I) is prepared by mini-emulsion polymerization.
