    Abstract: A process for preparing xylylenediamine, comprising the steps of ammoxidizing xylene to phthalonitrile and hydrogenating the phthalonitrile, which comprises contacting the vaporous product of the ammoxidation stage directly with a liquid organic solvent or with molten phthalonitrile (quench), partly or fully removing components having a boiling point lower than phthalonitrile (low boilers) from the resulting quench solution or suspension or phthalonitrile melt and, after the low boiler removal and before the hydrogenation, removing products having a boiling point higher than phthalonitrile (high boilers).

R , R = hydrogen (H), 1-16 carbon (C) alkyl, 6-12 C aryl, 7-12 C alkaryl or 7-12 C aralkyl, optionally mono- or poly-substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, acyl or acetoxy; X = ferrocenylene or 1-6 C alkylene (optionally interrupted with oxygen (O), sulfur (S) or imino (NR'') in the chain; R'' = H, 1-6 C alkyl, 6-12 C aryl, 7-13 C alkaryl, 7-13 C aralkyl or 5-8 C cycloalkyl; R = 1-12 C alkyl, 6-12 C aryl, 5-8 C cycloalkyl, 7-13 C aralkyl, 7-13 C alkaryl or 7-16 C alkoxyaryl; or 2 R attached to one phosphorus (P) atom = 5-8 C alkylene or 6-10 C cycloalkylene. An Independent claim is also included for the use of the Pd(0) or corresponding Pt complexes in the preparation of (I).

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the production of diaminoxylene, by continuous hydrogenation of liquid phthalonitrile, on a heterogeneous catalyst, in the presence of liquid ammonia, in a reactor, whereby a part of the reactor product is continuously recycled to the reactor feed as a liquid recycle stream (recirculating loop). A flow of fused phthalonitrile is added as a liquid to the recycle stream around the hydrogenation reactor in a mixing device, whereby the phthalonitrile conversion in the reactor on a single pass is greater than 99 % and the recycle stream comprises more than 93 % by weight of liquid ammonia and diaminoxylene and contains no further solvent for phthalonitrile.
