    Abstract: Cationic copolymers of ethylenically unsatd. cpds. are derived from (A) up to 10 mol. equivalents w.r.t. (B) of a radically polymerisable monomer with terminal double bond and having formula H2C=C(R")-R' (I) where R' is H, 1-2C alkyl, phenyl, vinyl carboxyalkyl with 1-4Cs per alkyl, acyl with 1-4Cs in the alkyl residue, carbonamide (opt. mono- or dialkyl-substd. in the N-atom) with 1-3Cs per alkyl, a hydroxy-methyl-carbamoyl residue (opt. etherified on the hydroxyls with a 1-4C alkanol) or a nitrile; R" is H or methyl; or =10 mol-equivalents of a mixture of =3 monomers having formula (I) and (B) 10-1 mol-equivalents, w.r.t. (A) of a thio-cpd. of formula CH2=C(R'")-S-CH2-C-(R"")H-OH (II) where R'" is H, 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; and R"" is H or 1-12C alkyl. These copolymers are alkylated with alkylating agents of formula RvX or X in combination with an acid HX where Rv is methyl, ethyl or benzyl; Rvi is H or methylphenyl; and X is a monovalent acid residue or an equivalent of a di- or trivalent acid residue. The copolymer as defined above may be a styrene-n-butylacrylate-hydroxyethylvinylsulphide copolymer. Used as paper sizings and textile dressings which have good storage stability even without the aid of emulsion stabilisers.

    Abstract: Process for the production of water-soluble auxiliaries for the papermaking industry by reacting (a) 1 part by weight of a polyamidoamine obtained by condensing 1 mole of a dicarboxylic acid having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms with from 0.8 to 1.4 moles of a polyalkylene polyamine having from 3 to 10 alkyleneamine units and containing up to 8 ethyleneimine units per basic nitrogen atom with (b) 0.1 to 4 parts by weight of an alpha , omega -dichloro polyalkylene oxide obtained by reacting a polyalkylene oxide having from 8 to 100 alkylene oxide units with a compound selected from the group consisting of a thionyl chloride and phosgene and then cleaving the reaction products by heating them to a temperature of from 70 DEG to 150 DEG C. in the presence of a tertiary amine as catalyst, as crosslinking agent, at a temperature above 20 DEG C. in aqueous solution or in a water-soluble organic solvent, the reaction being carried out to a point at which the viscosity of an aqueous solution containing 20% by weight of auxiliary is from 300 to 2,500 mPas.

    Abstract: Surface-sizing of paper is carried out using water-soluble salts of copolymers which has a K value of 30-55, made from (a) 50-90 pref. 50-80 wt.% of alpha-olefins containing 2-12C (b) 10.50% pref. 20-50% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids, and (c) =30% pref. 0-20% of non-basic polymerisable cpds., by polymerising the monomers in soln. in 1-4C primary or secondary alcohols in the presence of free-radical initiators at pref. 60-130 degrees C and then diluting the soln. with an alkaline aq. soln. to give a 20-40% solids content. The solns. are suitable for sizing paper such in filler; the sizing gives good resistance to alkali and penetration by inks.
