Abstract: Cholesteric laminate material has at least one 3-dimensionally crosslinked, oriented cholesteric layer (I) showing a homogeneous interference line pattern over the entire thickness. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) cholesteric pigment comprising layer(s) (I) with an average particle size of 5-50 mu m and thickness of 0.2-5 mu m; (b) compositions containing the pigment(s); (c) polarizers, comprising the laminate and optionally a substrate foil; (d) broad band polarizers comprising laminates with a total thickness of about 2-50 mu m (without substrate film) and 3-20 cholesteric layers with attuned reflection maxima; and (e) the production of the laminate with layer(s) (I).

An Independent claim is included for cholesteric liquid crystal compositions (A) (which preferably reflect left-circular polarized light in the UV region), comprising at least one chiral liquid crystalline monomer (I) which provides a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase having a pitch of less than 450 nm, optionally mixed with at least one achiral liquid crystalline monomer of formula (II). Abstract: The present invention pertains to an effect organic colouring agent from a multiphase mixture containing at least two organic substances, with one or more dispersed phases, jointly specified as phase 1, and with a continuous matrix phase (phase 2), characterized as follows: the dispersed phase (phase 1) does not swell in the matrix phase (phase 2) or, if any, in a very low proportion; there is a difference between the refractive indexes of phases 1 and 2. The invention also relates to the method for producing such effect colouring agents as well as the necessary solid, pasty or fluid preparations from phase 1 monodispersed polymers contained in a substance mixture which is liquid at a normal temperature or becoms liquid only at a higher temperature and which contains phase 2 polymer precursors to be converted into phase 2 polymers, and/or dispersed phase 2 polymers, as well as known monodispersed polymers. The invention further relates to the use of said effect colouring agents or the above-mentioned preparations used in the production of decorative and/or protective coatings, printing lacquers and inks involving said effect colouring agents.

Abstract: A process for producing pigment particles of defined shape and size is characterised in that a flat structure with holes of defined shape and size is treated with a polymerisable substance or mixtures of substances in such a way that the holes are filled, any solvents are removed, the substance or mixture of substances is polymerised and the thus formed pigment particles are removed from the holes. The shape and size of the thus produced pigments may be easily varied by selecting appropriate substrate parameters. They are suitable for the known uses of such substances, in particular in lacquers, paints and printing inks.

Abstract: A coating or printing process comprises coating a substrate with a material (I) contg. liq. crystalline (LC) monomers with at least two polymerisable gps. for coating and at least one for printing, and then polymerising the material. Material (I) contains either (a1) a chiral LC monomer and (b) a polymer binder and/or monomeric precursors thereof or, in the case of dispersion coatings and printing inks, a dispersant (d), or (a2) an achiral LC monomer, (b) as above and (c) a non-LC chiral cpd. Also claimed are (i) materials coated by this process; (ii) mixts. suitable for use as reaction lacquers and objects coated with such mixts., mixts. as above for use as printing pastes, and mixts. as above for use as emulsion pain; and (iii) the prodn. of pigments contg. polymerisable LC cpds. or mixts. as above by printing techniques.
