Abstract: A method is disclosed of producing polytetrahydrofurane or polytetrahydrofurane monoesters of C1-C10 monocarboxylic acids by polymerisation of tetrahydrofurane on a heterogenous catalyst in the presence of one of the following telogens: water, 1.4-butane diol, polytetrahydrofurane with a molecular weight of 200-700 Da, a C1-C10 monocarboxylic acid, or mixtures of these telogens. The catalyst used is a carrier catalyst which contains a catalytically active quantity of an oxygen-containing tungsten or molybdenum compound or mixtures of such compounds on an oxide carrier material and has undergone calcination at temperatures of 500-1000 DEG C after the precursors of the oxygen-containing molybdenum and/or tungsten compounds have been deposited on the carrier material precursor.

Abstract: A method for the prepn. of butane-1,4-diol comprises the reaction of 1,3-butadiene diepoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst contg. active components other than elementary palladium and/or platinum. Pref. the catalyst is a heterogeneous one and contains at least one group Ib, VIIb or VIIIb metal, pref. one or more from Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Na, NI, Re, Os or Ru, most pref. Co, Ni, Cu or Re. The catalyst carrier is chosen from one or more of the following: oxides of Al and Ti, ZrO2, SiO2, diatomaceous earth, silica gel, alumina, silicates, zeolites or active carbon. Hydrogenation is carried out at 0-300 (60-220) degrees C and 1-300 (10-250) bar in a solvent.
