Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydroxyalkylated polyethyleneimines by hydroxyalkylation of polyethyleneimines in one or two procedural stages to form reaction products which contain 1 to 200 mol alkylene oxide groups per NH group in the polyethyleneimine. In the one-stage process, there are anhydrous polyethyleneimines and 1 to 20 mol %, in relation to the polyethyleneimines, of at least one anhydrous base, or aqueous solutions of said substances are dehydrated and after removing all the water are reacted at temperatures above 135-150 DEG C with at least one alkylene oxide. Alternatively, in the two-stage process, in the first stage polyethyleneimine is reacted at temperatures of from 80 to 100 DEG C with 0.7 to 0.9 mol, in relation to a mol NH group in the polymerisate, of at least one alkylene oxide in an aqueous solution, and in the second stage the reaction product obtained in the first step is reacted in the presence of 1 to 20 mol %, in relation to polyethyleneimine, of an alkaline catalyst in the absence of water at temperatures of from 120 to 150 DEG C with at least one alkylene oxide to form hydroxyalkylated polyethyleneimines which contain 1 to 200 mol of alkylene oxide groups per NH group in the polyethyleneimine. The consequent alkoxylated products are only slightly coloured.

Abstract: Products of the condensation of sulphonated phenols, urea, further organic nitrogen bases and formaldehyde, obtainable by (A) sulphonation of phenols using from 1.0 to 1.5 mol of sulphuric acid per mole of phenol and (B) condensation of these sulphonation products with (a) from 0.5 to 1.8 mol of urea per mole of phenol, (b) from 0.001 to 0.5 mol of at least one further organic nitrogen base per mole of phenol, and (c) from 1.0 to 3.0 mol of formaldehyde per mole of phenol. The condensation products are suitable as tanning agents in the production of leather and pelts and as spray assistants for redispersible polymer powders.

Abstract: Condensation products obtainable by condensation of a mixture containing, as essential components, (A) from 90 to 99.9 mol % of a mixture essentially comprising (a) from 30 to 99 mol % of melamin and (b) from 1 to 70 mol % of a substitute melamin of the formula I in which X, X' and X'' are selected from the group consisting of -NH2, -NHR and -NRR', and X, X' and X'' are not simultaneously -NH2, and R and R' are selected from the group consisting of hydroxy-C2-C10-alkyl, hydroxy-C2-C4-alkyl-(oxa-C2-C4-alkyl)n where n = 1 to 5, and amino-C2-C12-alkyl, or mixtures of melamins I, and (B) from 0.1 to 10 mol %, based on (A) and (B), of phenols which are unsubstituted or substituted by radicals selected from the group consisting of C1-C9-alkyl and hydroxyl, or of C1-C4-alkanes which are substituted by two or three phenol groups, or di(hydroxyphenyl) sulphones, or mixtures of these phenols, with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-generating compounds, where the molar ratio between melamin and formaldehyde is in the range from 1:1.15 to 1:4.5.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of self-tanning, pre-tanning and co-tanning skins and hides and for retanning leather and hides, using carbonyl compounds of formula (I), in which R is hydrogen, C1-C8 alkyl groups, phenylalkyl groups with a total of up to 12 C-atoms or phenyl groups, wherein phenyl residues may also be substituted with one or two C1-C4 alkyl groups, C1-C4 alkoxy groups, hydroxyl groups, amino groups, carboxyl groups, sulfo groups or halogen atoms; n is 1, 2, 3, or 4; and x is an OH, SH, NH2 or PH2 residue when n = 1, a bridging O, S, SO, SO2, NH, NR , PH or PR group, where R is C1-C4 alkyl, when n = 2, a tertiary N- or P-atom or the trivalent group P =O when n = 3, and a quaternary N-atom when n = 4. The corresponding acetals or ketals of the carbonyl compounds of formula (I) may also be used.
