    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydroxyalkylated polyethyleneimines by hydroxyalkylation of polyethyleneimines in one or two procedural stages to form reaction products which contain 1 to 200 mol alkylene oxide groups per NH group in the polyethyleneimine. In the one-stage process, there are anhydrous polyethyleneimines and 1 to 20 mol %, in relation to the polyethyleneimines, of at least one anhydrous base, or aqueous solutions of said substances are dehydrated and after removing all the water are reacted at temperatures above 135-150 DEG C with at least one alkylene oxide. Alternatively, in the two-stage process, in the first stage polyethyleneimine is reacted at temperatures of from 80 to 100 DEG C with 0.7 to 0.9 mol, in relation to a mol NH group in the polymerisate, of at least one alkylene oxide in an aqueous solution, and in the second stage the reaction product obtained in the first step is reacted in the presence of 1 to 20 mol %, in relation to polyethyleneimine, of an alkaline catalyst in the absence of water at temperatures of from 120 to 150 DEG C with at least one alkylene oxide to form hydroxyalkylated polyethyleneimines which contain 1 to 200 mol of alkylene oxide groups per NH group in the polyethyleneimine. The consequent alkoxylated products are only slightly coloured.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing copolymers from vinyl esters and monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids by the radical copolymerisation of: (a) 20 to 80 mol % vinyl esters of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids having at least two carbon atoms, (b) 80 to 20 mol % monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and, optionally, (c) 0 to 30 mol % of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which can be copolymerised, and/or (d) 0 to 10 mol % monomers containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated non-conjugated double bonds in the molecule, in the presence of at least one sulphur, phosphorus and/or nitrogen compound having a reducing effect and of 0.05 to 30 wt %, relative to the monomers, of at least one surfactant in an aqueous medium and in the presence of initiators and, optionally, regulators. The invention further relates to the use of the copolymers or the copolymers comprising vinyl alcohol units obtained therefrom by hydrolysis and/or oxidation, as additives for washing and cleaning agents.

    Abstract: Magnetic ink concentrates are described which consist of a dispersion of superparamagnetic or magnetically hard solid particles which are present in water or in alcohol having a dielectric constant of >/= 20 in the presence of dispersing substances, the dispersing substances (dispersants) being polyelectrolytes which have a molecular weight of between 500 and 100,000 and contain at least two identical or different hetero atoms in the main chain and at least three free carboxyl groups or three free amino groups in the side chain. Such polyelectrolytes are readily biodegradable. These ink concentrates have advantageous properties, especially with regard to stability to sedimentation.
