Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a light-fast UV filter having a high absorbance due to the absorption in a UV-A region, scarcely manifesting an intrinsic color, i.e., having a sharp band structure and soluble in an oil or water by including a specific substituted α-methylstyrene derivative therein. SOLUTION: This substituted α-methylstyrene derivative represented by formula I [R is a 1-10C alkoxy or the like; R is H, a 2-10C alkyl or the like; R and R are each COOR or the like; R and R are each H, a (substituted) 1-12C alkyl or the like] (e.g. a compound represented by formula II) is used alone as a light-fast UV filter in a preparation for cosmetics and a pharmaceutical preparation or together with a well-known UV absorbing compound for the preparation for the cosmetics and the pharmaceutical preparation in order to protect human skin or human hair from sunlight. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out the condensation reaction of a compound represented by formula III with a compound represented by formula IV.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymeric ultraviolet absorber which exhibits a high water resistance, a low permeation into human skin, and a low residual monomer content and can be stably mixed and processed with other ingredients of cosmetic preparations by specifying the structures and contents of monomer units of the absorber. SOLUTION: The structural formulas of monomer units, a to d, are represented by formula I [wherein R and R are each H or a 1-8C alkyl; R is, e.g. a group of formula II; R is -(CO)n -R ; R is a 1-28C alkyl; n is 0 or 1; R is a 1-22C alkyl; and R is H or methyl]. The arrangement of monomer units is not limited, and the sum of a to d is 100; a is 5-95; b is 0-70; c is 5-95; and d is 0-70. The polymer is obtd. by the free radical polymn. of monomers for forming units a to d under normal conditions. The monomers are emulsified in water and copolymerized at 30-160 deg.C in the presence of a water-soluble initiator (e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile). The resultant polymer has a mol.wt. of 2,000-50,000 g/mol.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a cosmetic or the like, having a high absorbance in the UV-A area, showing a high photoresistibility and high stability, capable of manifesting pleasant touch feeling by using a specific 4,4-diarylbutadiene with a well-known compound. SOLUTION: This compound is 4,4-diarylbutadiene of formula I [R and R are each H, a 1-20C alkyl, a 2-10C alkenyl, an aryl or the like; R is H, COOR (R is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like), a 1-20C alkyl, CN or the like; R is COOR (R is same as R ), CN, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; (n) is 1-3], e.g. the compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by condensing a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV. The compound of formula I itself is well-known, and is used together with a compound used as a sun-screening agent for preparations for cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations. The compound of formula I is preferably used in the proportion of 0.1-10 wt.% based on the whole quantity of the preparation.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic capable of protecting the skin and/or hair from UV radiation by containing a combination of a UV filter having light protectiveness with the other ingredient. SOLUTION: This cosmetic contains both (a) and (b) ingredients. The ingredient (a) is a UV filter A, B or C of the formula (as for A, R is 2-ethylhexyl; R is t-butyl; X is NH; as for B, R and R are each 2-isopropyl-5-methyl- cyclohexyl; X is O; as for C, R is methylcyclohexyl; X is O). The ingredient (b) is (25mol)-ethoxylated p-aminobenzoic ethyl ester, p-methoxycinnamic 2- ethylhexyl ester, 2-ethylhexyl-2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl acrylate, 2- phenylbenzimidazolesulfonic acid or its salt, etc. This cosmetic, with the (a) and (b) ingredient contents at 0.1-15wt.%, respectively, can be prepared into such formulations as solution, oil, cream, ointment, lotion, gel and powder.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photoprotective agent for cosmetics and medicines, absorbing in a high absorbance in the UV-A-region, having a pointed band structure and soluble in an oil or water depending on substituents. SOLUTION: A compound expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are each an electrophilic group such as cyano, an alkyl or the like; R3 is H, a 1-20C alkyl or the like; X is a divalent group or the like such as O or S; Z is a group or the like expressed by formula II (R4 is H, an alkyl or the like which may bonds to a benzylidene ring I or the like)], (e.g. a compound expressed by formula III) is used singly or together with a UV-absorbing compound for other known preparations for cosmetics and medicines as a photo-stable UV-filter in preparations for cosmetics and medicines for protecting the human skin and hair from the sun light. The compound expressed by formula I is included preferably in 0.1-10 wt.% based on the whole amount of the preparations for cosmetics and medicines. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting, e.g. a compound expressed by formula IV with a compound expressed by formula V.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cosmetic or a medicinal preparation exhibiting a high light-protecting factor as much as possible with a very low concentration of a UV-absorbing agent by containing a specific triazine derivative and zinc oxide in a specific ratio. SOLUTION: This cosmetic or medicinal preparation contains (A) 0.1-10 wt.% one or more kinds of 1,3,5-triazine derivatives of formula I R1 to R3 are each a (substituted) 1-20C alkyl or a (hetero)aryl; X is O or NR4 [R4 is H, a (substituted) 1-20C alkyl or a (hetero)aryl]} and (B) 0.1-15 wt.% zinc oxide. Preferably, it contains 1-8 wt.% compound of the formula I in which R1 to R3 are each a 4-8C alkyl, X is O or NR4 (R4 is H or a 4-8C alkyl) and 0.1-10 wt.% component B, and more preferably contains 2-6 wt.% compound of the formula II of 2,4,6-trianilino-p-(carbo-2'-ethyl-hexyl-1'-oxy)-1,3,5-triazine and 2-8 wt.% component B. Preferably it has a light protecting factor of >14.
