Abstract: The invention relates to a mixture of diesters of a dicarboxylic acid and isomeric nonanols. Said mixture is selected among a mixture of adipic acid diesters in whose 1H-NMR spectrum, obtained in CDCl3, the ratio of the surfa ce area below the resonance signals in case of chemical shifts of between 1.0 a nd 2.0 ppm towards TMS to the surface area below the resonance signals in case of chemical shifts of between 0.5 and 1.0 ppm towards TMS is between 1.20 and 5.00. Alternatively said mixture is selected among a mixture of phthalic aci d diesters in whose 1H-NMR spectrum, obtained in CDCl3, the ratio of the surfa ce area below the resonance signals in case of chemical shifts of between 1.1 a nd 3.0 ppm towards TMS to the surface area below the resonance signals in case of chemical shifts of between 0.5 and 1.1 ppm towards TMS is between 1.00 and 4.00. The above adipic and phthalic acid diesters are suitable for use as softeners for moulding materials on a PVC basis and characterized by high compatibility, low brittleness temperature, low stiffness in torsion and/or high thermal stability.

Abstract: The mixture described is a mixture of isomeric nonanol diesters of a dicarboxylic acid, selected from the class consisting of a mixture of diesters of adipic acid in the 1H NMR spectrum of which, observed in CDCl3, the ratio of the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 1.0 to 2.0 ppm with respect to TMS to the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 0.5 to 1.0 ppm with respect to TMS is from 1.20 to 5.00 and a mixture of diesters of phthalic acid, in the 1H NMR spectrum of which, observed in CDCl3, the ratio of the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 1.1 to 3.0 ppm with respect to TMS to the area under the resonance signals at chemical shifts in the range from 0.5 to 1.1 ppm with respect to TMS is from 1.00 to 4.00.The diesters of adipic and phthalic acid are suitable as plasticizers for PVC-based molding compositions and have high compatibility, a low cold crack temperature, low torsional rigidity and/or high thermal stability.

Abstract: New mixtures (I) of dicarboxylic acid diesters with isomeric nonanols consist of adipate or phthalate diester mixtures having 1H-NMR spectra (obtained in CDCl3) with specific ratios of surface areas below the resonance signals for particular chemical shifts towards TMS. The ratio of the surface area for shifts of 1.0-2.0 ppm to that for shifts of 0.5-1.0 ppm is 1.20-5.00 for the adipate diesters; and the ratio of the surface area for shifts of 1.1-3.0 ppm to that for shifts of 0.5-1.1 ppm is 1.00-4.00 for the phthalate diesters; An Independent claim is included for mixtures (II) of isomeric nonanols which either: (i) form (I) as defined above on esterification with adipic or phthalic acid; or (ii) are obtained by hydroformylation of a mixture of isomeric octenes in presence of a cobalt catalyst and hydrogenation of the product, where the isomeric octene mixture is obtained by contacting a hydrocarbon mixture containing butenes with a heterogeneous catalyst containing a nickel oxide.

The supported catalyst is characterized in that polymeric particles having a hydrophobic core and hydrophilic side-chains are utilized as a support. In the examples, tentagel, polymeric particles comprised of a cross-linked polystyrene core with polyethylene glycol side-chains grafted thereon are utilized as supports. The transition metal is selected from metals of groups VIIB, VII, IB or IIB of the periodic table and from mixtures thereof.
