Abstract: A new material is provided that can be used for the fabrication of planar optical waveguides. The material includes silicon, oxygen and nitrogen and additionally deuterium. Also provided is a method for fabricating planar optical waveguides based on this new material, which uses deuterated gaseous precursors.

The switch further comprises M output channels (190 - 192) wi th M output optical free space elements (77-79), M output tunable optical lense s (155-157) with adjustable receiving characteristic for capturing the light wave from the large free space element (151) and for feeding the light wave to the M output optical free space elements (77-79).

Abstract: An optical adaptor OA monolithically integrates optical elements OE and first micro-mechanical features which define at least a first horizontal reference surface HP and a first vertical reference surface VP, wherein, said first horizontal reference surface HP is perpendicular to an optical plane, the latter being perpendicular the optical axis of said optical elements OF; and said first vertical reference surface VP is perpendicular to said first horizontal reference surface HP and parallel to said optical axis. Alignment of the elements may thereby be achieved. The optical elements may be a lens array and a mirror. The adaptor may be used for connecting to a photonic chip with a waveguide. The adaptor may also have second horizontal and vertical reference surfaces (CVP, CHP, Fig 5c).

Abstract: An apparatus and method directed to a scanning probe microscopy cantilever. The apparatus includes body and an electromagnetic sensor having a detectable electromagnetic property varying upon deformation of the body. The method includes scanning the surface of a material with the cantilever, such that the body of the cantilever undergoes deformations and detecting the electromagnetic property varying upon deformation of the body of the cantilever.

Abstract: The invention is notably directed to a scanning probe microscopy cantilever (10), comprising a body (15) and an electromagnetic sensor (20) having a detectable electromagnetic property varying upon deformation of the body. It further concerns a scanning probe microscope, a detection apparatus and a detection method using relying on such a cantilever. The sensor may comprise an optical waveguide and may comprise a closed loop ring resonator or racetrack resonator. The sensor 20 may be a Mach Zehnder interferometer.

Abstract: An optical waveguide device is proposed which comprises a substrate, thereupon a lower cladding layer, thereupon an upper cladding layer and between said cladding layers a waveguide element. The influence of the substrate on the stress-induced birefringence of the optical waveguide device is reduced by modification of the substrate from underneath the waveguide element.
