    Abstract: A mobile telephone network operating general packet radio service includes a base station (2) and a group of mobile telephones (M1 to M4). The base station (2) includes a control unit (8) which generates a successio n of data packets which are transmitted along a common downlink to all the mobiles (Ml to M8). Each data packet includes a header section containing an uplink state fl ag identifying a first selected mobile, to poll that mobile and cause it to return a packet of data to the base station along a common uplink channel. The header also includes an uplink state flag identifying a second selected mobile and is accompanied by the identity of and time slot for a second auxiliary uplink channel for polling the second mobil e to cause the second mobile to return a packet of data to the base station along said auxiliary uplink channel thereby enabling the polling of at least two mobiles using the same data packet. The polling sequence produced by the control unit (8) ensures that each mobi le is polled twice during each polling cycle, once accompanied with the identity o f and time slot for a secondary auxiliary uplink channel and once without.

    Abstract: According to the present invention there is provided a method of transmitting user data in a TDMA system in which the number of channels is increased by partitioning at least one time-slot in a TDMA frame into at least two sub-time-slots. Each sub time-slot may be allocated to a different user. User data may be transmitted in each time slot in a burst structure, user data being transmitted in each sub time-slot in a corresponding burst structure. User data may be transmitted in each time slot in a burst structure having n bits and wherein each time slot is partitioned into m sub time slots, user data being transmitted in each sub time-slot in a corresponding burst structure having n/m bits.

    Abstract: A method and system for reducing delay in wireless communications by use of a burst based access and assignment system. The method for setting up a communication channel uses short burst(s) (essentially a slot of a time frame). Time is saved by keeping the uplink and downlink channels flexible and independent of each other. Thus less time is used trying to fit all requests and responses into constrained choices as in previous protocols. The result is less delay to the mobile user and greater usage density for the wireless service provider.

    Abstract: A cellular radio communication system is disclosed for effecting handover of radio transmissions between a mobile station and one cell of a multicell network from said one cell to another cell of the network. The mobile station has a plurality of modes of operation in conjunction with the network.     Abstract: There is disclosed in a packet switched network a method of encoding speech packets into blocks, each speech packet including a speech header and a payload comprised of a speech frame, wherein at least two speech frames are encoded into a single block. Each speech frame may be associated with a different user. Each speech frame may be associated with the same user. A speech header associated with only one speech frame may be encoded. Each speech frame may be generated by a full-rate encoder. Two speech frames may be encoded into a block without puncturing. Each speech frame may be generated by a half-rate encoder. Four speech frames may be encoded into a block. Each speech frame may include a set of Class I bits and a set of Class II bits, the method further comprising: encoding a first speech frame by encoding at least a portion of the header and the set of Class I bits; encoding a second speech frame by encoding at least a portion of the header and the set of Clas I bits.
