    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mobile terminal capable of voice-communicating with a base station in a packet radio service. SOLUTION: The mobile terminal 2 is formed of; a processor 12 which fixes one channel among plural channels for voice communication between the terminal 2 and the base station 22, digitally encodes voice to generate voice information, composes voice information in the form of a voice packet and generates the assigning request of a channel for transmitting the voice packet; a transmitter 8 assigning this channel assigning request and the voice packet to the base station 22 in a network; and a receiver 10 assigned from the base station to receive ID of a channel for transmission of the terminal 2. At the time of receiving channel assignment, the processor 12 checks whether the packet is transmitted by the channel or not.

    Abstract: In the GPRS, a method of decoding uplink status having reduced interleaving depth in a RLC/MAC block is proposed; for RT-EGPRS users, all of the uplink flag bits are provided in the first burst of the four bursts; and for EGPRS users, nine bits of the uplink status flags are provided in the first burst of the RLC/MAC block and the remaining bits in the next three bursts. On receiving the first nine bits, a mobile performs an autocorrelation to identify the USF whether it belongs to the EGPRS or to the RT-EGPRS group.

    Abstract: A mobile terminal for communicating with a base station in a packet radio services network. The terminal has a processor for determining one of a plurality of channels for communication between the mobile terminal and the base station; for digitally coding speech to provide speech information; for assembling speech information into speech packets; and for generating channel allocation requests for a channel in which to send speech packets. A radio transmitter is provided for transmitting the requests and the packets to a base station in the network. A radio receiver receives identities of channels allocated by the base station for the mobile terminal to transmit on. The processor is responsive to each received channel allocation to determine that packets are sent on the allocated channel.In the GPRS since a channel is released when there is no packet to transmit, higher traffic levels can be obtained using the same number of radio channels.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a method of recovering a received packet comprising the steps of: generating a soft value for each bit of the received packet; storing the soft values of the received packet; performing an error check on the received packet; and responsive to detection of an error: i) receiving a retransmission of the packet; ii) generating a soft value for each bit of the retransmitted packet; iii) combining each generated soft value with the respective last stored soft values; iv) storing the combined soft values; v) performing an error check based on the thus combined soft values; and vi) responsive to detection of an error repeating steps i) to v). Circuitry for implementing such a method in a receiver is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A mobile telephone network operating general packet radio service includes a base station (2) and a group of mobile telephones (M1 to M4). The base station (2) includes a control unit (8) which generates a successio n of data packets which are transmitted along a common downlink to all the mobiles (Ml to M8). Each data packet includes a header section containing an uplink state fl ag identifying a first selected mobile, to poll that mobile and cause it to return a packet of data to the base station along a common uplink channel. The header also includes an uplink state flag identifying a second selected mobile and is accompanied by the identity of and time slot for a second auxiliary uplink channel for polling the second mobil e to cause the second mobile to return a packet of data to the base station along said auxiliary uplink channel thereby enabling the polling of at least two mobiles using the same data packet. The polling sequence produced by the control unit (8) ensures that each mobi le is polled twice during each polling cycle, once accompanied with the identity o f and time slot for a secondary auxiliary uplink channel and once without.
