Abstract: Telephone users desiring directory assistance services are connected via standard telephone procedures to a directory assistance provider, such as an operator. An operator provides the destination number and initiates a connection to that number. Once that connection is initiated, the connection is monitored for the occurrence of a predetermined condition, such as a busy signal. If no such condition is detected, the caller proceeds with the call in the normal manner. If, however, such a condition is detected, the caller is automatically transferred to a directory assistance provider for further help.

Abstract: A telephone or other communications device may be identified by a telephone number based on a home area (e.g., "NPA" or area code). When a caller is traveling with a cellular telephone, for example, the caller may call an information assistan ce service to provide information about the place being visited. Based on the location of the originating switch, the call may be routed to the call center closest to the caller. Sometimes, the call is first routed to a call center closest to the phone's home area. In this case, the call center receives from the signaling stream associated with the call a caller location identifier or an originating switch identifier, which identifies the caller's location or vicinity. If another call center is closer to the caller than the first call center, the first call center reroutes the call t o that closer call center. The invention allows an information assistance call to be routed to a call cente r closest to a caller's location rather than to the call center closest to the home area. This may b e advantageous when a caller is traveling and wants to have an operator local to the caller's location handle the call.

Abstract: In communications systems where multiple users may be associated with the sa me account, the voiceprint of a user is used to identify a profile of the user, facilitating identification of the user's preferences without requesting additional information from the user. The system may also monitor messages played to individual users, to control the playing of the messages to users. Calls made by users associated with the same account may be allocated to the caller initiating the call in bills, based on voiceprints. Voiceprints may b e collected for use in deriving voiceprint samples during registration of a us er with the system and during conversations between the user and the system. A voiceprint comparison threshold may be set based on the type of phone callin g the system, to compensate for noise. Changes in phone numbers and/or address es of users are monitored and the threshold is adjusted if changes are found.

Abstract: A system and method for searching, accessing updating database records on a plurality of geographically dispersed databases is provided. Update databases consisting of a plurality of update records having at least one field capable of being set to at least one particular value are used to update records in target databases. When a database search is conducted on one or more target databases, a search is also conducted on update databases associated with the target databases. The results of the searches are processed. If the at least one field in an update record is set to a predefined value, then all returned records equivalent to the update record are discarded.
