Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare the subject compound useful as a flame retardant for polyolefins, etc., or as an intermediate thereof in high purity and yield by allyl- etherizing TBS with allyl chloride in the presence of an alkali in a solvent under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:Bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl)sulfone (hereinafter referred to as TBS) is allylated with allyl chloride in the presence of an alkali (e.g. NaOH) to provide the objective compound. In the reaction, an aqueous solution homogeneously mixed with an organic solvent such as water-soluble isopropyl alcohol or dioxane in a concentration range of 25-60vol.%, preferably 30-40vol.%, is used as the reaction solvent and the solvent is heated to approximate refluxing temperature thereof. The allyl chloride and the alkali are used in amounts of >=2moles and >=2moles, respectively, per mole of the TBS.

CONSTITUTION:Bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl)sulfone (hereinafter referred to as TBS) is allyl-etherized with allyl bromide in the presence of an alkali (e.g. NaOH) in a solvent such as water-isopropyl alcohol at 60-70 deg.C to provide the objective compound. The allyl bromide as an allylation agent is dropped at a dropping rate of =2moles, preferably 2-3 moles, per mole of the TBS.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a flame-retardant for polymeric compounds, etc., in high yield by reacting a phthalic anhydride compound with a diamine compound in a solvent consisting of a mixture of an aprotic polar solvent and a hydrocarbon solvent at a specific mixing ratio. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by reacting (A) a phthalic anhydride compound with (B) a diamine compound in (C) a solvent consisting of a mixture of (i) an aprotic polar solvent (e.g., N,N-dimethylformamide, N- methyl-2-pyrrolidone or sulfolane) and (ii) a hydrocarbon solvent forming an azeotropic mixture with water (e. g., benzene, toluene or chlorobenzene) at a mixing volume ratio (i:ii) of 3:97-30:70 (preferably 5:95-15:85) e.g., at 100-250 deg.C (preferably 120-170 deg.C) for usually 0.2-10hr (preferably about 0.5-7hr) while removing formed water from the system by azeotropic distillation.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substance in high selectivity, purity and yield by reacting a 4,4'-dialkoxybiphenyl with a hydrogen halide in an aliphatic carboxylic acid solvent containing a prescribed amount of water and carrying out dealkylation. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by the formula [R and R' are 1-15C aliphatic hydrocarbon group] is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula HX (X is Cl, Br or I) in an aliphatic carboxylic acid solvent (preferably acetic or propionic acid) containing 1-50wt.% water at 50-200 deg.C for 0.5-50hr to afford the subject substance. The concentration of the compound expressed by the formula is about 0.1-5mol/l. The subject substance is useful as a monomer for engineering plastics and also an antioxidant for high polymer materials.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound in high selectively and yield, by using a mixed solvent of N,N'-dimethylformamide and an alcohol in reacting 4,4'- dibromobiphenyl with a metallic alkoxide in the presence of a copper based catalyst. CONSTITUTION:4,4'-Dibromobiphenyl is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula MOR (M is alkaline metal; R is 1-15C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic hydrocarbon group which may be substituted) in the presence of a copper based catalyst to produce the title compound useful as a raw material for biphenyl-4,4'-diol (a monomer for engineering plastics or antioxidant for high polymer materials). In the process, a mixed solvent containing N,N'- dimethylformamide (DMF) and a compound expressed by the formula R'OH (R' is respective groups of the above-mentioned R) at 0.1-10:1 volume ratio of R'OH:DMF is used to suppress debromination reaction and afford the aimed compound from the raw material readily producible from biphenyl in high yield.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound readily and in high yield while extremely suppressing occurrence of insoluble components, by simultaneously feeding acenaphthene derivative and bromine at a constant rate to a reactor precharged with a halogenated hydrocarbon and an iron catalyst and carrying out reaction. CONSTITUTION:1-50wt% solution of an acenaphthene derivative shown by formula I (n is >1; x, y and z are positive values; with the proviso that x+y+z=0 or 1) and/or a condensate thereof and >=50wt% bromine solution are simultaneously fed at a constant rate to a reactor precharged with a halogenated hydrocarbon such as CCl4, etc., and an iron catalyst such as FeCl3, etc., preferably at 0-50 deg.C and the halogenated hydrocarbon is brominated preferably at 0-50 deg.C to give the aimed compound shown by formula II (n'=n; x', y' and z' are 1-3; with the proviso that y'+z'=2-6). The aimed compound is used as an intermediate for synthesizing a polybromoacenaphthylene.
