    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an RZ pulse source which has high power and is jitter-free, compact (inexpensive) and power efficient. SOLUTION: The modulated RZ pulse source has a modulated light source optically and a optical trap coupled to a stabilized Bragg grating filter. The light source is modulated in power and frequency, and has an adjusted channel wavelength λ. The Bragg grating filter has a reflective bandwidth having a high slope reflective cutoff, and is preferably tunable. By a feedback arrangement responsive to the taps, the source channel wavelength λ is kept on the edge of the reflective bandwidth and RZ pulses are shaped. When the Bragg grating is stabilized, the feedback system maintains λ at a value linked to the grating reflective edge, and converts the light source modulated by overlapping at least one part of the optical spectrum of the source, into RZ pulses with high extinction ratio.

SOLUTION: A high speed and high capacity digital pulse transmission system, i.e., at least 10 Gb/s at a duty-free of at least 10%, which uses a transmission fiber with a dispersion value greater than 20 ps/(nm-km) or more negative than -5 ps/(nm-km), is operated in a pseudo-linear transmission mode(PLTM), thereby decreases pulse distortion, i.e., eye closure penalty as the dispersion value increases. Then, system performance is improved by increasing the value of absolute dispersion of the transmission fiber.
