    Abstract: Rheological properties determine the suitability for biaxial orientation. The suitability of a partially crystalline polymers, especially a polypropylene polymer, for the preparation of biaxially oriented foils and films can be decided by determination of its rheological properties. The method involves determination of the viscosity change with temperature in the region of the melting point, definition of a characteristic quantity in such a way that its value is inversely related to the viscosity change with temperature, determination of the extent of strain hardening on partial melting of the polymer, for which a characteristic quantity is so defined that its value is the greater the more marked the strain hardening. Both characteristic quantities when multiplied together are coupled to an end characteristic quantity, so that the suitability of the partially crystalline polymer is the better the larger the value of the end characteristic quantity.

    Abstract: A random copolymer (I) of propylene with other 2-10 C 1-alkenes comprises 0.7-1.4 wt.% ethylene comonomer or 0.7-3.0 wt.% 4-10 C 1-alkene. (I) has a solubility in cold xylene of 1.0-2.5 wt.% or 0.75-2.0 wt.% when the comonomer is ethylene or a 4-10C 1-alkene respectively. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the preparation of (I) by the gas phase polymerisation of propylene and a 2-10 C 1-alkene at 50-100 degrees C and 15-40 bar in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst containing: (A) a titanium containing solid component containing at least a halogen containing magnesium compound and an electron donor; (B) an aluminum compound; and (C) at least a further electron donor compound. The ratio of partial pressure of propylene to comonomer is 400:1-15:1 and the molar ratio of (B) to (C) is 20:1-2:1; and (ii) film, fiber or molded articles containing (I).

    Abstract: Ziegler-Natta type catalyst system (ZNC), containing (a) a titanium-based solid component containing compounds of Ti and magnesium, a halogen, an inorganic oxide support (IOS) and a carboxylate ester as electron donor, (b) an aluminium compound and (c) optionally another electron donor, in which the oxide (IOS) has a pH of 1-6, an average particle diameter of 5-200 microns and an average primary particle diameter of 1-20 mu m, and contains pores or channels with an average diameter of 0.1-20 mu m in amounts of 5-30 vol%. Also claimed is (i) a process for the production of ZNC by interacting components (a), (b) and (c) together at 0-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar; (ii) a process for the production of polymers of 2-20C alk-1-enes by polymerisation of the alkene (preferably propylene) and optionally other comonomers at 20-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar in presence of (ZNC); (iii) polymers of propylene obtained by this process.
