    Abstract: In the GPRS, a method of decoding uplink status having reduced interleaving depth in a RLC/MAC block is proposed; for RT-EGPRS users, all of the uplink flag bits are provided in the first burst of the four bursts; and for EGPRS users, nine bits of the uplink status flags are provided in the first burst of the RLC/MAC block and the remaining bits in the next three bursts. On receiving the first nine bits, a mobile performs an autocorrelation to identify the USF whether it belongs to the EGPRS or to the RT-EGPRS group.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a method of recovering a received signal comprising the steps of: equalising (100) the received signal, channel decoding (102) the equalised received signal, wherein a priori information of the received signal is utilised in the equalisation step. The equalising step may be performed in a sub-optimum equaliser. The channel decoding step may be performed in an a posterior channel decoder.     Abstract: There is disclosed a method of recovering a received packet comprising the steps of: generating a soft value for each bit of the received packet; storing the soft values of the received packet; performing an error check on the received packet; and responsive to detection of an error: i) receiving a retransmission of the packet; ii) generating a soft value for each bit of the retransmitted packet; iii) combining each generated soft value with the respective last stored soft values; iv) storing the combined soft values; v) performing an error check based on the thus combined soft values; and vi) responsive to detection of an error repeating steps i) to v).     Abstract: A method of estimating channel impulse response in a signal transmitted over a channel in a communication system is described. The channel estimator obtains a priori knowledge about the transmitted signal, and then uses the transmitted signal and the a priori knowledge to choose an estimate of channel impulse response which minimizes the expected distance between the transmitted signal and a reconstructed signal. The expected distance that is minimized is a cost function, represented by E{∥r-Bh∥2r}. By using soft decision feedback, the invention minimizes erroneous decision feedback which can cause error propagation. The decisions are usually in the form of log likelihood ratios (LLR).
