Abstract: The invention concerns a process for preparing phenylchlorophosphines of formula (I): Clx-p-(-C6H5)y, in which x has the value 1 or 2, and the total of x + y is 3, or mixtures of compounds (I) by reacting phosphorus trichloride (PCl3) with triphenylphosphine (P-(C6H5)3) in a molar ratio of PCl3 to P-(C6H5)3 of between 1:5 and 5:1 at a temperature of between 280 and 450 DEG C, the mixture produced by this reaction, before being distilled, being reacted with between 1.5 and 15 mol elemental chlorine per mol of elemental phosphorus present in the reaction mixture.

These polymers Ia and Ib are suitable as viscosity index improvers for engine oils.
