Abstract: A thermoplastic moulding composition which is a mixture of 5-95% by weight of an impact-modified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (I) and 95-5% by weight of a polycarbonate (II). The impact-modified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (I) is a mixture of two constituents A and B. It contains from 50 to 95% by weight of a copolymer A, based on A + B, which is built up from: a1) from 65 to 95 parts by weight of a monovinylaromatic monomer, a2) from 5 to 35 parts by weight of an unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride, optionally a3) from 2 to 15 parts by weight of an acrylically unsaturated monomer. Constituent B is present in a proportion of 5 to 50% by weight, based on A + B, and is a graft copolymer built up from: b1) from 50 to 90 parts by weight of a rubber which has a glass transition temperature, Tg, of below 0 DEG C, b2) from 10 to 50 parts by weight of a monovinylaromatic monomer, and b3) from 0.1 to 25 parts by weight of a (meth)acrylate and/or acrylonitrile, where, regarding the parts by weight of the monomers building up the hard matrix and the graft shell, the absolute values of the difference of the parts by weight between the sum of [a2) and a3)] and [b3)] differ by 4 or less than 4. The moulding composition according to the invention is prepared by mixing the constituents component I with component II in the melt. The moulding compositions according to the invention are used for the production of mouldings.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols which have alkyl substituents in both ortho-positions and may additionally have an alkyl substituent in one meta-position but not in the para-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction, employing oxygen, at from 10 DEG to 25 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst complex comprising a copper salt and an N-substituted imidazole, in the presence of an aromatic C8-C10-hydrocarbon solvent. N-Methylimidazole, N-ethylimidazole, N-isopropylimidazole, N-n-butylimidazole, N-cyclohexylimidazole, N-octylimidazole and N-phenylimidazole are preferably used as the imidazole, advantageously in amounts of from 0.5 to 5 percent by weight.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of foams by melting a thermoplastic, mixing the melt with a volatile blowing agent under a pressure of from 25 to 250 bar, decompressing the mixture to atmospheric pressure, and cooling the foam. The plastic employed is a copolymer comprising from 67 to 73 % by weight of alpha -methylstyrene and from 33 to 27 % by weight of acrylonitrile having a viscosity index of from 45 to 70 ml.g . The resultant foams of high heat distortion resistance can be used as insulating materials.

Abstract: The invention relates to moulding compositions comprising a) polyphenylene ethers and b) impact-modified styrene polymers, which are characterised in that they i) contain impact-modified styrene polymers whose soft component has a mean particle diameter of greater than 0.2 mu m, with the proviso that a substantial amount of the soft component has a particle diameter of greater than 3 mu m, and ii) contain a polyorganosiloxane as a further component. Such moulding compositions have a balanced property profile with respect to toughness, both in the notched impact strength test and in the falling tube test, and flow properties.

Abstract: Molding materials containing styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, in which an additional essential ingredient is from 0.1 to 2.0% by weight, based on the copolymer, of a three-block polymer X-Y-X, where X is a terminal ethylene oxide block and Y is a central propylene oxide block. The proportion of terminal ethylene oxide blocks X, based on block copolymer, is from 5 to 20% by weight, while the central propylene oxide block Y has a number-average mean molecular weight of from 700 to 3,000 and its proportion is from 80 to 95% by weight, based on block copolymer. The number-average molecular weight of the sum of the two terminal blocks X is from 140 to 1,000. The novel molding materials may be used for the manufacture of moldings, since the three-block copolymer X-Y-X advantageously influences the processing characteristics of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, and in particular broadens the range of conditions under which they may be injection-molded, without adversely affecting the mechanical properties of the styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers. Accordingly, the injection molding scrap rate can be kept very low.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the removal of the catalyst in the preparation of high-molecular-weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols by oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex comprising a metal salt and an organic amine in the presence of a solvent, and removal of the metal ion component of the catalyst from the polyphenylene ether solution, the removal of the metal ion component of the catalyst being carried out by means of high-polymeric, crosslinked cation exchanger resins, which may also be fibrous, characterised in that the cation exchanger is fibrous. The removal of the metal ion component is expediently carried out from a polyphenylene ether solution containing less than or equal to 100 mg/kg of catalyst metal ions per mg/kg of catalyst metal ions.
