The invention is characterised in that the method is carried out in a reacto r (1) comprising thermal sheet metal plates (2) which are arranged at a distan ce from each other and in the longitudinal direction of the reactor (1), said thermal sheet metal plates being cross-flown by a heat carrier. The reactor also comprises devices for supplying and withdrawing (3, 4) the heat carrier to/from the thermal sheet steel plates (2), and gaps (5), which are disposed between the thermal sheet steel metal plates (2) and which are filled with t he solid bed catalyst and are introduced into the gas flow containing the methanol vapour and the molecular oxygen.
