    Abstract: A process is claimed for the prodn. of comb-like polypropylene (PP) of formula (I) in the presence of catalyst systems contg., as active component (A), bridged metallocenes of formula (II): M = Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb or Ta; X = F, Cl, Br, I, H, 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl or -OR5 (with R5 = 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, or alkaryl, aralkyl, fluoroalkyl or fluoroaryl with 1-10C alkyl gps. and 6-20C aryl gps.); R1-R4 = H, 1-10C alkyl, 7-15C cycloalkyl (opt. substd. with 1-6C alkyl), 6-15C aryl or arylalkyl, -Si(R6)3 (with R6 = 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl or 3-10C cycloalkyl); or two adjacent R gps. may form a 4-15C cyclic gp.; A = -O-, -S-, -NR7-, -PR7- or a gp. of formula (with R8-R11 = as for R1-R4, including Si(R12)3 with R12 as for R6, R7 = 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, 3-10C cycloalkyl or Si(R13)3 with R13 = 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, 3-10C cycloalkyl or alkylaryl); Y = Si, Ge, Sn or C; R14 = H, 1-10C alkyl, 3-10C cycloalkyl or 6-10C aryl; m, n = positive integers; O = 1-50; p = 1, 2, 3 or 4.

    Abstract: Partly crosslinked plastic materials (A) with a melt flow index 230/2.16 of 0.1-100 g/10 minutes are obtd from: (a1) a polymer contg: (a1.1) 25-97 wt% of a copolymer of propylene with 0.1-15 wt% 2-10C alkene-1, and (a1.2) 3-75 wt% of a copolymer of propylene with 15-80 wt% 2-10C alkene-1; or (a2) a polymer contg: (a2.1) 25-97 wt% propylene homopolymer, and (a2.2) 3-75 wt% copolymer (a1.2) as above; or (a3) a propylene homopolymer with a melt flow index 230/2 of 0.1-100 g/10 minutes; or (a4) a statistical propylene copolymer contg less than 15 wt% 2-10C alkene-1 comonomer; and (b) a cpd of formula: (H2C=CR-COO)nX (I) R = H or 1-4C alkyl; X = 1-30C alkyl or 7-30C aralkyl, opt contg in-chain O and/or N atom(s); and n = 2 or 3; and these materials (A) are obtd by reacting (a1), (a2), (a3) or (a4) with cpd (b) at 180-280 deg C and 1-100 bar for a mean residence time of 0.2-10 minutes. Also claimed are: (i) a process for the prodn of (A) by reacting the above polymers with (b) at 190-260 deg C and 1-60 bar for a mean residence time of 0.2-5 minutes, pref immediately after prodn of the polymer in a mixer connected to the polymerisation reactor; and (ii) films, fibres and mouldings made from (A).

    Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding materials (I) contain (A) 5-90 wt.% polyphenylene ether (PPE) with Mw 8000-30,000, (B) 5-94 wt.% impact-modified vinylaromatic polymer with rubber content 2-30 wt.%, in which the soft component has mean particle dia. 1.5-6.6 microns, with 15-95 wt.% of the particles having mean dia. 0.2-2 microns and 5-85 wt.% having mean dia. 4-7 microns, and (C) 0-60 wt.% normal additives and process aids. Pref. (C) is a fire retardant additive (1-30 wt.%) and/or a pigment (0.1-15 wt.%). (A) has Mw 12,000-25,000. In (B), 50-95 wt.% of the soft component has particle dia. 0.2-2 microns and 5-50 wt.% has dia. 4-7 microns. Pref. (A) is poly-(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) or a homologue thereof. (B) is impact-modified polystyrene (HIPS), prepd. e.g. by polymerisation of styrene in the presence of polybutadiene, polyisoprene etc. Pref. fire retardant is Ph3PO, Ph3PO4, Mobil Antiblaze 19 (RTM), etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of fibres, film and moulded prods. (claimed) Provides modified PPE moulding materials with good processing properties (no delamination, homogeneous pigmentation), balanced mechanical properties (esp. good multiaxial impact strength) and good stress cracking resistance.
