Abstract: The present invention provides a process for preparing 1,6-hexanediol by hydrogenating dialkyl adipates, alkyl 6-hydroxycaproates, 1,4-cyclohexanedione and 4-hydroxycyclohexan-1-one as ester mixtures comprising impurities, by a) freeing resulting the esterification mixture of excess alcohol and low boilers in a first distillation stage (alcohol removal), b) carrying out a separation of the bottom product in a second distillation stage into an ester fraction substantially free of 1,4-cyclohexanediols and a fraction comprising at least the majority of the 1,4-cyclohexanediols, c) catalytically hydrogenating the ester fraction substantially free of 1,4-cyclohexanediols (ester hydrogenation) and d) in a purifying distillation stage, obtaining 1,6-hexanediol from the hydrogenation effluent in a manner known per se, which comprises selectively hydrogenating the ester mixture before stage a) and/or before stage b) (purifying hydrogenation).

Abstract: La invencion se refiere a un metodo para incrementar el rendimiento en la produccion de alcoholes polivalentes, especialmente trimetilolpropano, obtenidos por medio de condensacion de formaldehido con un aldehido superior. De acuerdo con el metodo de la invencion, el tratamiento con acido se lleva cabo en una mezcla (fraccion de punto de ebullicion alto) que se obtiene por reprocesamiento, contiene derivados de dichos alcoholes y tiene un punto de ebullicion mas alto que e) alcohol respectivo, y el alcohol polivalente es recuperado a partir de la fraccion de punto de ebullicion alto tratada con acido. El metodo de la invencion esta caracterizado en que e) contenido de agua de la fraccion de alto punto de ebullicion suma entre 20 y 90% en relacion a la mezcla completa de la fraccion de punto de ebullicion alto y agua.

Production of 1,6-hexanediol of purity at least 99 % comprises: (1) hydroformylating 3-, 4- or 2-pentenoic acid alkyl ester with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in presence of rhodium compounds and tertiary organic polyphosphites to a mixture mainly of 5-, 4- and 3-formylvaleric acid esters; (2) hydrogenating the ester mixture in chromium-free mainly copper-containing catalysts; and (3) purifying the resulting diol mixture by fractional distillation.
