Abstract: Aqueous synthetic resin formulations essentially contain A) from 3 to 75% by weight of one or more synthetic resins which are composed of a) from 50 to 99.9% by weight of one or more unsaturated carboxylic or vinyl esters, b) from 0.1 to 12% by weight of one or more alpha , beta -monoethylenically unsaturated monobasic or dibasic acids or their ahydrides, c) from 0 to 10% by weight of one or more monoethylenically unsaturated acetophenone or benzophenone derivatives, d) from 0 to 35% by weight of one or more other copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, in polymerized form, B) one or more metal cations having a charge of from 2 to 4, in water-soluble form, C) from 0 to 10% by weight, based on the synthetic resin A, or benezophenones or acetophenones which are not monoethylenically unsaturated, D) effective amounts of emulsifiers or protective colloids or a mixture of these active ingredients, E) not less than 5% by weight of water and F) from 0 to 85% by weight of finely divided fillers, and the total amount of the cations B is such that it is capable of neutralizing from 0.2 to 6 times the amount, corresponding to the amount of acid functions incorporated in the form of the monomers b in the synthetic resin A, of their conjugated bases. These synthetic resin formulations are suitable for coating, adhesive bonding, sealing or impregnating.

Abstract: Low-molecular-weight polymers of acrylic acid esters are obtainable by subjecting a) from 80 to 100 % by weight of at least one acrylic acid ester of a C1- to C8-alkanol (monomers I) and b) from 0 to 20 % by weight of other copolymerisable monomers (monomers II) to free-radical polymerisation in a pressure vessel at temperatures of from 130 to 140 DEG C in isopropanol solution in such a manner that from 70 to 95 % by weight of a solvent is introduced into the vessel and the remainder of the polymerisation batch is fed in continuously over the course of from 3 to 7 hours in separate feeds, of which one contains the monomers, and, when the polymerisation is complete, the solvent is removed by vacuum distillation, the proportion by weight of the solvent, based on the monomers, being from 5 to 15 %, the proportion by weight of the initiators, based on the monomers, being from 0.5 to 3 %, and the half life period of the initiators at the polymerisation temperature being from 10 seconds to 3 hours. These low-molecular-weight polymers are suitable as external plasticisers in coating compositions based on synthetic resins.

These synthetic resin formulations are suitable for coating, adhesive bonding, sealing or impregnating.

Abstract: Aq. dispersion of opaque, hollow+free particles of dia. 0.07-4.7 microns are obtd. by an at least two-stage emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsatd. monomers so as to give water-dispersible core-shell polymer particles, the process comprising (a) a first stage in which the cores are obtd. by emulsion polymerisation of a carboxyl gp.-free ethylenically unsatd. monomer in presence of 5-70 wt.% (based on monomer wt.) of non-polymerisable cpds. (I) which contain acid gps. and which show an liq. aggregated state at below +40 deg.C; and (b) a second and opt. further stages in which shells of a polymer with Tg above 50 deg.C are formed on the cores such that the ratio of the wt. of the cores formed in stage (a) to the total wt. of the particles is 1:4-150. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of the dispersions is claimed in coating materials, the particles, although being free of holes, being suitable for at least partially replacing inorg. pigments in paints. This process for producing opaque particles is simpler than that of EP-342944, the addn. of a base and heating to above the Tg not being necessary on account of the use of (I) in stage (2).
