Abstract: A saligenin derivative such as the magnesium salt of a polynuclear bridged phenol product is useful as an additive for a lubricating composition. Up to 11 hydrocarbyl-substituted phenolic aromatic units are bridged by -CH2- or - CH2OCH2 groups, and additional terminal -CHO or -CH2OH substituents may be present. At least one aromatic ring contains a hydrocarbyl substituent of 1 to 60 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms in all such hydrocarby l groups should be at least 7.
