Abstract: A process for the recovery of a Lewis acid from a reaction mixture prepared by hydrocyanation of an olefinically unsaturated compound to form a nitrile that under certain conditions of quantities, pressure and temperature exhibit a miscibility gap with water, in the presence of a catalyst system containing a Lewis acid and a complex compound comprises phase separation and distillation. A process for the recovery of a Lewis acid from a reaction mixture (I), prepared by hydrocyanation of an olefinically unsaturated compound to form a nitrile that under certain conditions of quantities, pressure and temperature exhibit a miscibility gap with water, in the presence of a catalyst system containing a Lewis acid and a complex compound comprising a phosphorous containing ligand and a central atom is characterized in that: (a) the complex compound is separated from the mixture (I) to yield a mixture (II); (b) mixing of the mixture (II) with water under pressure and temperature to form a phase (III) that contains a higher water content than the nitrile and a phase (IV) having a higher nitrile content than water whereby the phase (III) has a higher content of Lewis acid than phase (IV); (c) mixing of the phase (III) with a liquid diluent (V) that does not form an azeotrope with water and whose b.pt. is higher than that of water or under certain conditions of pressure forms an azeotrope or a heteroazeotrope with water; (d) distillation of the mixture of (III) and (V) to yield a mixture (VI) having a higher water content than the diluent (V) and a mixture (VII) having a higher diluent (V) content than water whereby the mixture (VII) has a higher Lewis acid content than the mixture (VI) and; (e) addition of the mixture (VII) to a hydrocyanation of an olefinically unsaturated compound to form a nitrile that under certain conditions of quantities, pressure and temperature exhibit a miscibility gap with water, in the presence of a catalyst system containing a Lewis acid and a complex compound comprising a phosphorous containing ligand and a central atom.

Abstract: A process for the removal of water from a mixture comprising water and zinc chloride, which comprises adding to said mixture comprising water and zinc chloride an aprotic, polar diluent whose boiling point in the case where an azeotrope is not formed between said diluent and water under the pressure conditions of the distillation mentioned below is higher than the boiling point of water and which is in liquid form at this boiling point of water or which forms an azeotrope or heteroazeotrope with water under the pressure and temperature conditions of the distillation mentioned below, and distilling the mixture comprising water, zinc chloride and the diluent with removal of water or said azeotrope or said heteroazeotrope from this mixture, giving an anhydrous mixture comprising zinc chloride and said diluent.

Independent claims are also included for: (1) transition metal complexes of (I); (2) production of transition metal complexes of (I) by reacting a transition metal or transition metal compound with (I); (3) addition of hydrogen cyanide to an olefinic double bond in the presence of a catalyst which is a complex as above; (4) isomerization of organic nitriles in the presence of a catalyst which is a complex as above. R , R , R = H, 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl or 1-8C alkoxy, but not all H; R = H or Me.

Abstract: A process is described for preparing 3-pentenenitrile, characterized by the following process steps: (a) reacting 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide over at least one catalyst to obtain a stream 1 which comprises 3-pentenenitrile, 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile, the at least one catalyst and 1,3-butadiene, (b) distilling stream 1 in a column to obtain a high-1,3-butadiene stream 2 as the top product and a low-1,3-butadiene stream 3 as the bottom product which comprises 3-pentenenitrile, the at least one catalyst and 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile, (c) distilling stream 3 in a column to obtain a stream 4 as the top product which comprises 1,3-butadiene, a stream 5 which comprises 3-pentenenitrile and 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile at a side draw of the column, and a stream 6 as the bottom product which comprises the at least one catalyst, (d) distilling stream 5 to obtain a stream 7 as the top product which comprises 2-methyl-3-butenenitrile, and a stream 8 as the bottom product which comprises 3-pentenenitrile.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for removing water from a mixture containing water and zinc chloride. The invention is characterized in that said mixture containing water and zinc chloride is mixed with an aprotic, polar diluting agent whose boiling point, in the event of non-azeotropic formation of said diluting agent with water under the pressure conditions of the distillation mentioned below, is higher than the boiling point of water and is liquid at the boiling point of water or one azeotrope or heteroazeotrope with water is formed under the pressure and temperature conditions of the distillation mentioned below, and the mixture containing water, zinc chloride and the diluting agent is distilled while removing water or said azeotrope or said heteroazeotrope from this mixture while obtaining a water-free mixture containing zinc chloride and said diluting agent.
