Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing oligomers consisting mainly of repeating units derived from 1- or 2-butene from a hydrocarbon stream consisting substantially of branched and linear hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms, and comprising olefinic branched and linear hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms (C 4 starting stream) by a. in step a), separating the C 4 starting stream into a fraction consisting mainly of linear hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms (l-C 4 fraction) and a fraction consisting mainly of branched hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms (b-C 4 fraction), by contacting the C 4 starting stream with a membrane which is easier to pass for linear hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms than for branched hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms, b. in step b), optionally after removing butanes, oligomerizing the olefinic hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms present in the l-C 4 fraction, c. in step c), subjecting the olefinic hydrocarbon compounds having 4 carbon atoms present in the b-C 4 fraction to one of the following steps: c1. reaction with methanol to give methyl tert-butyl ether (step c1) c2. hydroformylation to give substantially isovaleraldehyde (step c2) c3. polymerization to polyisobutylene (step c3) c4. dimerization to 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene (step c4) c5. alkylation, substantially to form saturated hydrocarbon compounds having 8 or 9 carbon atoms (step c5).

Abstract: An oligomerization catalyst for olefins having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms is produced by treating aluminum oxide with a nickel compound and a sulfur compound, either simultaneously or firstly with the nickel compound an then with the sulfur compound, and subsequently drying and calcining the resulting catalyst, wherein a molar ratio of sulfur to nickel in the finished catalyst of from 0.25:1 to 0.38:1 is set in this way. The catalyst and its use are also described.

Abstract: A coated catalyst for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons comprises, on an inert nonporous support, a catalytically active composition comprising a defined amount of vanadium oxide, titanium dioxide, a cesium compound, a phosphorus compound, and antimony oxide, wherein the catalytically active composition is applied in two or more layers and where relative to the inner layer or inner layers the outer layer has an antimony oxide content which is from 50 to 100% lower and wherein the amount of catalytically active composition of the inner layer or layers is from 10 to 90% by weight of the amount of catalytically active composition, and can be used for preparing carboxylic acids and/or anhydrides, in particular phthalic anhydride; also specified is a production process for such catalysts.

Abstract: Production of surfactant alcohols or their ethers by derivatization of 10-20C olefins or mixtures, comprises: (i) metathesizing a 4C olefin mixture; (ii) removing the 5-8C olefins; (iii) dimerizing the separated olefins to a 10-16C olefin mixture; (iv) derivatizing the mixture to a mixture of surfactant alcohols; and optionally (v) alkoxylating the alcohols. Production of surfactant alcohols or their ethers by derivatization of 10-20C olefins or mixtures, comprises: (i) metathesizing a 4C olefin mixture of 1-butene/2-butene ratio at least 1.2; (ii) removing the 5-8C olefins; (iii) dimerizing the separated olefins (optionally in admixture) to a 10-16C olefin mixture; (iv) derivatizing the mixture to a mixture of surfactant alcohols (optionally after fractionation); and optionally (v) alkoxylating the alcohols. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the novel olefin mixtures obtained by steps (i) - (iii) above; and (2) the novel surfactant alcohols and their alkoxylates obtained by steps (i) - (iv) and optionally also step (v) above.

Precatalysts and catalysts produced therefrom for the partial oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons are also provided.

Abstract: Preparation of alkylaryl compounds comprises production of a 12C-olefin mixture and reaction of the 12C-olefin mixture with an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of an alkylation catalyst to form alkylaromatic compounds whereby additional linear olefins are added before the reaction. A process for the preparation of alkylaryl compounds (I) comprises: (A) production of a 12C-olefin mixture by trimerization of butenes or dehydrogenation of 12C-alkanes, with optionally pre- or post isomerization, or by the production of a 12C-olefin mixture by oligomerization of ethene, followed by isomerization; and (B) reaction of the 12C-olefin mixture from (A) with an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of an alkylation catalyst to form alkylaromatic compounds whereby additional linear olefins are added before the reaction. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for the production of alkylarylsulfonates (II) by sulfonation and neutralization of alkylaryl compounds (I); (2) the alkylaryl compounds (I); (3) the alkylarylsulfonates (II); and (4) washing- or cleaning agents containing the alkylarylsulfonates (II).
