    Abstract: Thermostable bismuth vanadate/molybdate pigments are prepared by precipitating onto a pigment, obtained by calcination, of the formula Bi VO4.Bi2Mo O6 where n is 0.2-2.5, in aqueous suspension at 70 DEG -100 DEG C. within the pH range from 4 to 9.5 a first SiO2-containing layer using an alkali metal silicate solution of a magnesium hexafluorosilicate solution, maintaining the suspension at 70 DEG -100 DEG C. for not less than 1 hour, producing a thick coating on the precoated pigment by adding further alkali metal silicate solution, magnesium hexafluorosilicate solution or a mixture of the two within the pH range from 4 to 9.5, and finally depositing wax on the SiO2-containing layer by means of a waxing emulsion/dispersion, the products showing, compared with the starting pigment, an appreciably improved thermal stability in plastics.

    Abstract: Finely divided magnetite pigments with a narrow particle size spectrum are produced by the reduction of ferric oxide, the ferric oxide being one which has been obtained by the combustion of iron carbonyl, and the reduction of the ferric oxide being carried out under pressure in the presence of a liquid phase consisting of, or containing, a liquid aliphatic alcohol and/or aldehyde, at temperatures above the boiling point of the liquid phase, measured under normal conditions. The magnetite pigment is suitable for the production of magnetic inks for the ink-jet printing process.

    Abstract: Effect pigments are prepared by a process in which a pigment substrate comprising flaky particles, of which from 10 to 90% by weight have a longest dimension of from 60 to 400 mu m and the remainder have a longest dimension of from 3 to 30 mu m, are treated, in a fluidized bed, with one or more metal chlorides and steam in the gas phase, at elevated temperatures. During this procedure, the particles are coated with metal oxide. After coating, the fraction having a particle size of from 3 to 30 mu m is separated off as the effect pigment. The coatings obtained adhere very firmly to the flaky particles. The pigments are used for coloring finishes, plastics, cosmetic products and glasses.

    Abstract: The invention relates to magnetic discs in which first a non-magnetic intermediate layer and then the magnetic coating are applied by conventional methods to an aluminum disc. The intermediate layer applied to the non-magnetic metallic carrier disc is a hard non-magnetic coating which can be polished and which consists of a dispersion of a pulverulent mixture of finely divided inorganic non-magnetic pigments having a Mohs' hardness of at least 7 in a binder which can be cured and which provides firm cohesion of the pigment particles and good adhesion thereof to the non-magnetic base disc, the pigment mixture containing at least 3 percent by weight of corundum powder having a particle size of from about 1 to 20 mu u. Magnetic discs with very thin magnetic coatings which possess good magnetic and mechanical properties and whose thickness varies only minimally are thus produced in a simple manner.
