Abstract: The novel cyclopropylalkyl or -alkenyl compounds have the general formula In this formula, the symbols A , A , A denote unsubstituted and in particular substituted (by halogen or CN) aromatic or heteroaromatic molecular building blocks, such as 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5- diyl, which are linked via a single bond or via functional groups M , M , such as CO-O or CH2-O; H and m are zero or 1; j, l, n are zero, 1 or 2. The radicals are R , R , R are H or alkyl/alkenyl, R is alkyl/alkenyl or a substituent known from LC chemistry, such as an alpha - haloalkanoic acid radical. G denotes alkylene or alkenylene.

Abstract: Ferroelectric liquid crystal systems with high spontaneous polarization, in particular greater than 35 nC cm , and good orientation properties in the ferroelectric phase, in particular, the SC* phase, contain at least three different optically active compounds, preferably dopants in a non-optically active basic mixture which has a nematic phase above the smectic phase. The optically active compounds are chosen so that they do not all induce a helix with an identical direction of rotation in the nematic phase. Their relative concentration is chosen so that the overall resulting pitch of the helix in the total cholesterol phase is not less than 10 mu m.

Abstract: Novel optically active esters of 5-ethyl- and 5-vinyl-1,3- dioxolane-4-carboxylic acid, their use as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures, and liquid-crystal mixtures containing the novel esters. Optically active 1,3-dioxolanyl derivatives of the general formula (I) are suitable as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures. The symbols in the general formula have the following meanings: R has an analogous structure to the moiety on the right of X in the general formula or is an alkyl or alkylene radical, which may be substituted, R and R are H or alkyl, which may also be substituted [R and R are alternatively, together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring, a cycloaliphatic radical] R is vinyl or ethyl, with the proviso that at least one radical R is vinyl or ethyl if R is analogous to the moiety on the right of X in the formula (I), -A , -A and -A are aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring systems, -M and -M are -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O,-OCH2 or -C=C, and X is O, S or O-CO-O. The particular advantage of the compound of the general formula (I) is that it is able to induce high twisting power in a cholesteric phase.

Abstract: Optically active 1,3-dioxolane derivates of the general formula which carry a mesogenic radical in the 4-position are suitable as dopes in - in particular ferroelectric - liquid-crystal mixtures. The symbols in the general formula have the following meanings: R has a structure analogous to the moiety of the general formula on the right of X or is an alkyl or alkylene radical, which may be substituted, R , R and R are H or alkyl (R is alternatively alkenyl), which may also be substituted [R and R , together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring, may alternatively be cycloaliphatic or keto groups], j, l and n are zero, 1 or 2, and k and m are zero or 1, with the proviso that n is zero if k is zero, m is zero if n is zero, and 1 , -A and -A are an aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring system, -M and -M are -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O, -OCH2 or -C IDENTICAL C and X is O, S or O-CO-O. The particular advantage of the compounds of the general formula (I) is that they are able to induce a high twisting power in the cholesteric phase, but without significantly affecting the magnitude of the spontaneous polarisation already present in the mixture in the smectic C phase. They are therefore suitable for pitch compensation, in particular for ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixtures.

Abstract: Optically active and mesogenic 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic esters are suitable for use as dopants in liquid crystal mixtures. They lead to liquid-crystalline ferroelectric phases having short response times and to electroclinic phases having large electroclinic coefficients. Their particular advantage is that they induce a helix of very large pitch, so that there is no need for any helix compensation by other dopants. Moreover, the 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic esters exhibit high UV stability.

Abstract: The novel compounds are chiral esters formed from alpha -substituted carboxylic acids and mesogenic hydroxyl compounds of the general formula (I) (I) in which the symbols have the following meaning: MO=molecular radical of a mesoganic hydroxyl compound MOH after removing an H, the radial MO being expressed by the general formula (II): R2-(A1)n1-(B-)(n2(A2)(n3-O(II) where the meaning of R2 is a straight-chain or branched (C1-C12)alkyl or alkenyl, it being possible for one or two nonadjacent CH2 groups to be replaced by O and/or S atoms, or if n1=1, also F, Cl, Br or CN, A1, A2 are, independently of each other, 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dithiane-2,5-diyl, or 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene, it being possible for said groups to be substituted at least singly by F, Cl, Br, CN and/or (C1-C12)alkyl (optionally, one or two nonadjacent CH2 groups are replaced by O and/or S atoms), B is CO-O, O-CO, CH2-CH2, OCH2, CH2O, CH=N, N=CH, N=N N(O)=N, n1, n2, n3 are, independently of each other, 0, 1 or 2, n1 and n3 not being simultaneously 0, Y is F, Cl, Br, CN or CF3, and R1 is branched, (C3-C9)alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, the compounds having R1=branched (C3-C7)alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, Y=F, Cl or Br, R2=(C1-C11)alkoxy, A1, A2= n1, n3=1 and n2=0 being excluded.
