    Abstract: Novel optically active esters of 5-ethyl- and 5-vinyl-1,3- dioxolane-4-carboxylic acid, their use as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures, and liquid-crystal mixtures containing the novel esters. Optically active 1,3-dioxolanyl derivatives of the general formula (I) are suitable as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures. The symbols in the general formula have the following meanings: R has an analogous structure to the moiety on the right of X in the general formula or is an alkyl or alkylene radical, which may be substituted, R and R are H or alkyl, which may also be substituted [R and R are alternatively, together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring, a cycloaliphatic radical] R is vinyl or ethyl, with the proviso that at least one radical R is vinyl or ethyl if R is analogous to the moiety on the right of X in the formula (I), -A , -A and -A are aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring systems, -M and -M are -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O,-OCH2 or -C=C, and X is O, S or O-CO-O. The particular advantage of the compound of the general formula (I) is that it is able to induce high twisting power in a cholesteric phase.

    Abstract: Novel cyclohexylphenylpyrimidines of formula (I) are claimed as is also their prepn. by (i) alkylating 4-(4-trans-alkylcyclohexyl) benzamides (pref. with dialkyl sulphates) to give imidoethers; (ii) reacting the imidoethers with ammonia to give amidines which are then converted by reaction with 1,3-dicarbonyl cpds. to give the corresp. pyrimidine cpds.. In (I) R1 = opt. branched (a) chiral 2-16C alk(en)yl opt. with 1 or 2 non-neighbouring CH2 gps. replaced by -0-, -S-, -C0-, -C0.0-, -0.C0-, -Si(Me)2- or - C(Me)2- and opt. with one or more of the alk(en)yl H atoms replaced by F and opt. with the terminal CH3 gp. replaced by cyclopropylmethylene and R2 = opt. branched (a) chiral 1-10 (pref. 2-8)C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use is claimed of (I) as components of liq. crystal mixts.. In partic. ferroelectric liq. crystal mixts. of 2-20 components are claimed which contain (I) pref. in an amt. of 1-25 mol.%, such mixts. being used in switching or display devices. (I) have low m.pt. and wide liq. crystal phases while still having suitable electro-optical properties (viscosity and switch-times and -angles) in liq. crystal mixts..     Abstract: The novel compounds are chiral esters formed from alpha -substituted carboxylic acids and mesogenic hydroxyl compounds of the general formula (I) (I) in which the symbols have the following meaning: MO=molecular radical of a mesoganic hydroxyl compound MOH after removing an H, the radial MO being expressed by the general formula (II): R2-(A1)n1-(B-)(n2(A2)(n3-O(II) where the meaning of R2 is a straight-chain or branched (C1-C12)alkyl or alkenyl, it being possible for one or two nonadjacent CH2 groups to be replaced by O and/or S atoms, or if n1=1, also F, Cl, Br or CN, A1, A2 are, independently of each other, 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dithiane-2,5-diyl, or 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene, it being possible for said groups to be substituted at least singly by F, Cl, Br, CN and/or (C1-C12)alkyl (optionally, one or two nonadjacent CH2 groups are replaced by O and/or S atoms), B is CO-O, O-CO, CH2-CH2, OCH2, CH2O, CH=N, N=CH, N=N N(O)=N, n1, n2, n3 are, independently of each other, 0, 1 or 2, n1 and n3 not being simultaneously 0, Y is F, Cl, Br, CN or CF3, and R1 is branched, (C3-C9)alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, the compounds having R1=branched (C3-C7)alkyl, benzyl or phenyl, Y=F, Cl or Br, R2=(C1-C11)alkoxy, A1, A2= n1, n3=1 and n2=0 being excluded. The compounds preferably find application in tilted smectic liquid-crystalline phases which they transform into ferroelectric liquid-crystalline phases; they have high values of spontaneous polarization.
